Lets see when I have the family in the car I shift first at about 3500 and the rest is just before 3000. I do cruise the highway in 4th gear all the way up to 85 before going to fifth. I just like having the response if I want it. When the family is not with me then the shift in first goes to like 4500-5000 depending on mood, second is about the same third and fourth is about 4000.

When I have my daughter in the car, I keep it between 2-3k...though now that she's getting older (just turned 4), she loves to hear the intake when I floor it. ![Big Grin](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Other than that, I beat the hell out of it (take it to redline constantly)...only after my clutch is engaged entirely (bad bearings taught me a valuable lesson
)
I've heard it's bad to put load on the engine at low RPM. What's the lowest "safe" engine speed that you can put load on? I keep it above 2k as a general rule, but is it safe to go down to 1.5k? 1k?

I prefer the smooth, quiet low-rev driving, so I shift at maybe 1500-2500 in 1st, and wind the rest out to 3k tops, sometimes shifting at 2000-2500 depending on the conditions (uphill/downhill/etc)

I shift at 2500 a couple days before the first of the month
After payday, I tend to rip it if it's not raining
Every now and then if I see a nicely hooked vehicle trying to rev with me, I'll drop it like it's hot, just to let people recognize that Maxima's not only look sick, but they can rip too...
