How much life does a CV joint have once the boot is ripped?

I know, they don't last very long. Once the boot rips, the grease spins out like crazy and decorates your muddy wheel well and fender protector with shiny black dots

They say that they can seize up or damage your transmission, causing loss of control.

They say that you're driving on borrowed time once your boot rips.

I am sure all those are true, I just wonder how long can you drive once the boot is torn. If you drive it long enough, you screw up your half shaft and you need to change that too.

Are there symptoms or noises that you can hear to tell you of each progressive stage of deterioration? If you hear the clicking at slow speed turns, is that a sign of it being too late?

I'm bummed ... I was gonna drive to Indiana tomorrow night and I-94 & I-69 are two lonely highways to try out my new 8600k HIDs. Now, I can't drive my Max this weekend & I'm just bummed
(Fixing it next week)

Happy Labor Day weekend folks.

It depends on what kind of driving you do and how long the driving is.

Fill it full of grease and then duct tape it together. That should hold for a couple days at least. Can't be any worse than leaving it wide open.

You can always get an el'cheapo split boot kit for $30, install that and leave it there for a year or two. I've heard they can last quite a while that way. Especially if there was no damage to the joint before it goes on.

you can go to any shop that specializes in front wheel drive and they will rebuild your cv joints for about 100 bux per side. i had mine done with a 2 year warranty. cheap.

I was once told once its torn, if you been driving for under 8 hours when torn then you can just replace the boot and repack the grease, over 8 hours then you need to rebuild the cv joint..

then again it all varies due to the enviroment you drive in ect..

ive heard the same as above, that once u drive on it 4 awhile u might as well replace the axle, and given that replacing an axle isnt that expensive neway just go that route....

back 2 your question back in the day i tried 1 of those 1 peice boots when mine busted and it FELL OFF leaving me w/ no boot atall, and i drove that way for prolly a month b/f the axle started clicking if i went real slow on a sharp turn..how long an can go when its clickin who knows, i only went a week cause i was paranoid, b ut i know some1 that had a sentra that went months w/ clicking axles no prob (although i imagine thats just crazy)

i had my cv boot clicking for a bit last winter. without out funds to replace it i drove on it for about 1-2 months then replaced the entire axle. but considering i never had to go for that maybe the reason. plus when this happened i kept well within the speed limits plus every turn i took at liek 5 mph. my advice, just get the whole axle replaced.

Well, here's an update. Dealer checked it out and said the joint was fine. They put in a repair kit with new boot and grease, now I'm happy again.

I just did my passenger side cv boot yesterday.
1hr to take out
30min to separate joint, remove old boot, clean bearings, pack new grease, install new boot, put joint back together
1hr to reinstall.

If it's your 1st time, allot a day. also, you need to borrow a cv boot clamp. Otherwise, your boot won't hold. It's a $5 tool.

that's nice. i had no idea that anyone gave lifetime warranty for wear and tear parts. so if your cv joint boot tears 5 years from now it's no charge?
