Tranny stuck in safe mode any thoughts?

Well.. beating on the old car and she decided to lock up on me.

It stays in 3rd gear. Or OD if I go fast enough. It is driveable.. but No 1st gear,2nd gear or Reverse.

I tried the resetting of the TCM.. I got a BUNCH of codes.. but it still is in fail safe mode...

any thoughts?

Well I got 2nd back.. so 2nd/3rd/OD work.. still no reverse or 1..

If I blew my tranny why does 2/3/4 work?

Its gone. I think 1st and reverse are on the same link or whatever, because that is exactly what happened to me. No reverse or 1st gear. 400 bucks later for another temporary auto and then another $$$ (for a 5spd swap) and now Im pretty good. You might as well throw in the stick and get you a few more ponies out of that beast.

1st and reverse do typically go together....

buttt, i used to have that problem say in the snow, etc. if the tires spun a lot, my transmission would lock out 1+2 (never tried reverse), so it would only drive in 3rd and 4th gear... my solution? either waiting it out, or restarting the car. this sounds more like an electronics issue.

Bags...just get the 5spd swap. If you get another auto, unless it's a built one, sooner or later, it's going to go on you again.

To those that want me to do a 5 spd swap.. it takes too much tim and $$$ fo what I need right NOW.

I will be doing a motor/tranny swap... but I need a 2nd car for that and a house... I am not very mature about my money and my car.. but this is a MUST.

My plan is to try and figure out what is wrong and fix it and turn the boost back down to 5-6 PSI.

8-9 PSI is what killed it....

Let me explain EXACTLY what has been happening...

@8-9 PSI when left in Drive, @ WOT I still hit the limiter 2 or 3 times. The other night I could not get it to go into OD.. @ 130 MPH.. it hit the limiter 3 times I let off it shifted and I got back on it.

It does this in EVERY gear at the shift. So it seems there is too much power for the tranny and the computer. I am thinking if I had a rasied rev limiter ( 7000 ) NOT manually shifting it may not have been as bad. But I am guessing.

So the thing to do now is get my car working 100% again and start planning. I have been planing for awhile now.. just need a few things to happen... one of them is paying my car off this year.

So there is the story in a nut shell...have no fear I will still be terrorizing the roads... just in 3rd gear

Someone else asked what codes did you pull, also who's VB mod did you have? Maybe a drop resistor mode like Jime (if that's the member with it)
full line pressure @ WOT once you arm/trigger the system along with the VB mod for all the other positions of the throttle. For you WOT shifting seems to be what means the most.

The code was improper shift into 2nd, which means there is a mechanical fault.

I fixed my tranny.. BUT it messed up again.

So I am going to pull the TC and hope for the best.

I have maximum tunnings stage 2 VB mod. The drop resistor may work.. however, having a Turbo/SC means @ partial shifts I can still have boost.

That is where I noticed the 1st problems , during partial throttle shifting. I tried to keep that in mind when the transmission shifted. So having a switch is not the best answer.

I also set my MBC @ 8 PSI.. putting me in the 280 WHP/TQ range.

I also got some codes off the TCU, but I am going to redo those tomorrow. Those codes are not as direct as the ECU codes and not as easy to see..lol

That's the way I am going to go in the next few months. Also the way he builds it it will put down as much power to the wheels (if not more) as a 5 speed. Plus faster shifting than you can ever do in a 5 speed.

Gabe, Ive met Rob and he is a very stand up guy. I had my cousins minivan tranny redone and this dude even on a normal tranny rebuild changed the gear ratios a tad so the minivan picks up quicker. Also put in stronger clutches and stuff. All on a standard rebuild that was $750 cheaper than ANY place in 50miles around him.

Thanks Dixit that means alot from you, since I know you.
The only thing that is going to kill me is shipping cost (about $300-$350 each way) Do you have any friend in the shipping biz. That is my main hold up. It will cost me an extra$600-700 to get it. but from what Rob, Redmax, and quicksilver has told me in the past it will be way better than going 5 speed. especially when driving with a phone, map, house graphics, taco and a drink in my hand it would be hell to change gears. lol

To frieght it, it shouldnt cost more than $150 tops. 5spd can be shipped from $50-75. I just bought a 5spd as well. I had a guy price shipping from Ohio to ATL for only $75, NYC to ATL for $75. I know the Auto weighs about 165 I believe and the 5spd weighs about 125.

Check with frieght companys, not UPS. They will rip you cause they really aint in the heavy load business.

Well L10 has been known for some really crappy trannys in the Maxima world. Couple people have had them and blown them as well. Dont know what type of warranty L10 gives, but NRH will give you a 3yr warranty and he still backs that even if you told him that you were on the track and were torque braking the hell out of it and blew it on the line. He stands by it cause he told me that tranny is good to hold at least 500whp if not more.

Also he does a custom LSD (posi traction sort of) that no one else does. He uses race quality clutches and actually custom machines the gears and other parts.

Yea it comes with a price tag of over $3000 but with everything you are getting and a 3yr warranty, I think that is if anything on the cheap side.

Dixit the reason I asked is the only L10 ride ive seen here to be honest is on Ferhans ride. Yeah I know about the 2-3 rebuild hassles he went through be4 they just built him a proto-type and I guess its held up pretty considering the madness hes got under the hood. The L10 I belive is said to take upward to 600 hp and 500tq (crank im guessing) so considering the NRH will hold 500whp is pretty much on par. I think the L10 is apprx $4K, the NRH at $3k is cheap IMO as well. Looks like Ill just save that bit of info and when im ready for boost ill give them a call. I was thinking of goind 5spd for quite some time, but I dont think ill regret the auto...especially with a pair of slicks when at the track. Do any of you guys have a link to the NRH site (if they have 1?)
Thanks

They don't have one that I know of. Just call Rob, he is a great guy and trust me I have done a ton of reasearch on him ove the last few months. That is who I am going with. You will be happier with his stuff more than L10 (that is junk) compared to HRH. If you what to wait 2 months than I will be able to tell you first hand.
As for people like you and me that we are not there. You can either pull it off and send it back to him to fix or he will send you to a approved shop near you so that he can have them fix it with his help.

I have more then two months to spare man, I do have the funds to do it all so to speak right now...but that wouldnt be too smart on my part. Im investing more of the $ for myself. Once I get extra dough to play with (once in a blue moon) im definetly going to give it a go. I just have a habbit of being on a mod drought for quite some time then ill get $1-2K worth or upgrades at once and wait quite some time again So im definetly in no hurry.
Please do post back with your results...I got nothing but time.
Thanks.
