Timing belts and you

What years had timing belts and what years had timing chains?

Also is there a difference between the SE, GXE and GLE when it comes to this?

All VQ engines have timing chain. That would be 95+. Not sure about 94 and previous.

1st gen had a chain, all second gen cars had belts, all 3rd gen GXEs & '89-'91 SEs have belts, '92-'94 SEs and anything with a VQ series engine has chains.

Actually, not quite. Ever seen a chain stretch to the point that it's about to jump a cog? Chains do wear and stretch beyond expected tolerance. It's worth checking a chain at 100,000 miles, which is convenient because that's likely to be about the time you want to check your water pump too.

They are designed to last a lifetime But we all know they must be looked at every so often. All my chains have lasted over 100k So there is no actual change interval, but it should be looked at and oil should be properly changed to insure the longest possible life of the chain. Is that better quinky?
