Any DOT approved motorcycle helmet will do. Half helmets are fine as long as theyre DOT approved.

also make sure you get an SA rated one if you ever plan on doing any road course events. many tracks will let you use an M (Motorcycle) rated one, but others require an SA rated helmet.

the differences, I dunno. just what I've heard elsewhere.

but try bike shops. they usually have a pretty good selection of helmets. if not, call up your local race supply shops. (no, I didn't say rice, I said race. there's a BIG difference). should be able to get cheapie ones for around $100. they're fine if you're only going to do auto X or drags.. if you're going to open track, then I suggest getting a better one as the risk of injury is greater.

(I've never seen a FWD car have much problem at the drags, and I've never seen a car flip at all at auto X.. OTOH, I've seen three cars flip and several off-course excursions at the local road course in the last few months.)

Take it from a guy who rides bikes. Pick up an HJC if you're looking for a good quality, affortable DOT approved helmet. The best helmet on the market is Arai, but you're talking well over $400 for an entry level. With an HJC, you can pick one up for under $200.

You might want to call the track your going to. Most tracks in my area don't require a helmet unless you running 13.9 or less. No reason to spend the money if you don't need to.

If you do get an HJC, I highly suggest removing the facemask or replacing it with a good shatterproof one. (they even say non-shatterproof on them)
a friend of mine flipped his M3 last weekend and the only injury was from where the facemask shattered (on the airbag no less!) and cut up his face. otherwise nobody had a scratch.

Any high end motorcycle helmet can be used for all types of car racing. I have a Shoei RF900, good helmet.

Go out and buy a SA2000, then you'll be covered for all auto situations. Get a full face, half is pointless IMHO. If you are going to crash hard enough that you need a helmet, chances are you will be better off with a fuill face. I have a Bell M2 helmet.

I got my GForce off Saferacer.com.

The difference between M and SA is that SAs are nomex lined (fire resistant) and have an extra test they have to endure which is a rollbar impact test. Get an SA2000 or if you KNOW you will NEVER be on a road course then get at least an M2000 they can be had about $50 cheaper at the low end of the spectrum. My GForce 900 was $200.

The gloves are not for show, hot summers, a leather steering wheel and sweaty hands do not mix well when you are on the track for 30+ minutes. The gloves are Sparco. For the record, I do not do anything for show.
