pinging noise

When you park your car after driving, and the car is pinging , what is the issue with the car. I know i've read before that it is the excess gasoline burning off the manifold but is this true? what causes this? how can it be damaging to your car?

The engine (cooling when turned off) slightly contracts, causing the metallic pinging noise...

its all the metal cooling down and contracting, like quicksilver said. however I believe it comes from the exhaust more that it does from the engine.

^ Yeah, I've noticed that noise just recently since I had my custom cat-back put on. Only happens during warm up and cool down. I dont think its anything to worry about, just a bit annoying.
