Fresh from a 4,000 mile drive, i figured I might as well get up early and head to the autox. It was a good day for maximas. Blade99SE and I switched cars first run so he could feel the coilovers and I could try his tires. We both came to the same conclusion, my car handled great but the tires weren't cutting it. Driving his car really hit that home, I think I might get some 300zx rims and Bridgestone RE-71's.

Anywayz, I ended up 7th out of 16. Doesn't sound good, but I was a lot closer to the front of the pack than I used to be. I was also running with the full stereo installed (+200 lbs that I usually remove for races) due to laziness on my part, and there were a few parts of the course that I didn't quite get right any time. .3 seconds would have put me in 4th, easily achievable had I removed the stereo and corrected some mistakes. So I'm pretty happy. Blade got 2nd, less than .1 seconds from first (a Cavalier Z24, can you believe it?). The cav actually kicked his *** pretty good, but he hit a cone on his fastest run and the 1 second penalty still had him just barely ahead.

So I think if I get some good tires I'll be set. I was starting to doubt the maxima's competativeness, but not any more.

Cool....AutoX next weekend in Houston...

and it will be the first time I'll have my Kuhmo 712's (putting them on my stock rims!!). I think I'll be able to go back into G Stock instead of Running DSP -- which is FAR too hard in a no power/suspension mod Maxima.

I can't wait...it should be a good time, and I dont' have to worry about running my tires too hard. (plus, I got a power drill so I'll have fun using that!).

Any pics with the coilovers??? I haven't seen any posted (but I don't visit the 4th gen BBS). How's the car handle?? Do you love them?

Alrighty...talk to you later man,

Ryan

Good going Chad! Did you get a chance to check out the Cavalier? Did the guy have a ton of mods, or was he just a kick a$$ driver?

Here she is, not the best lighting...

Handles great, I never thought I'd get rid of understeer in a fwd car with good low end, but it's almost gone. An RSB should get rid of the last minute traces of it. Set it all up to full stiff and there's no roll, hardley any roll at the settings I drive on the street. Aaron and I sat on my hood and it didn't sink at all At full stiff it's almost locked the front suspension, hello go cart! Now I need some tires...

The cavalier is pretty worked up, he's got yoko avs sports on enkei racing wheels, strut tower bars and sway bars all over the place, fully worked suspension, and he's a pretty mean driver. But man, he's got this nasty grey velour dash pad... I don't get that at all, maybe if you have a 20 year old car with a cracked dash, I can see putting a pad on it...

What kind of tires are you running now? Do you think the coilovers are a worthwhile investment? How are they in normal daily driving? Will 300ZX rims fit right on a 4th gen without modification?

What kind of tires are you running now?

Dunlop SP5000's. That's right, all season with sipes for snow They're great for all season tires, but they are by no means a dry weather performance tire... Aaron has RE730
s and I was impressed with how they gripped.

Do you think the coilovers are a worthwhile investment?

Not for street usage... If you want looks and a little better performance, the H&R springs are good, Aaron's car rides pretty nice with them. The only reason I got the coilovers is because it's the only way to get the AGX shocks. For racing, it's definately worth it, about as stiff as you can get.

How are they in normal daily driving?

Not bad. I had them set to the lowest for a little while and that rode really well, but then I kept bottoming out. I have the fronts at 2 and rears at 3 now for street. It rides ok, freeway ride is fine but rought in town roads can be a bit harsh. I still need to get some bushings in there to cut down on the noise, they are a lot louder than stock or aftermarket non coilovers...

Will 300ZX rims fit right on a 4th gen without modification?

Yes, and they only weigh 16 pounds each.

Sorry Chad but the Cav didn't kick my ***. He was just lucky I exited the last slaphom I probably lost a good .5 sec which would have given me a better time than his best time of 32.8xx. Anyways you'll never beat me, even with lighter wheels and better tires, since auto-xing is 40% car 60% driver. Right now and probably all ways I'll be a better driver than you.

Right now I'd say I'm the best auto-xing driver on this maxima forum.

No really, I know the better tires make you way more competive than you think. Your at the same point I was until I got my RE730's.

Hey, anyone seen my hip waders, it's getting pretty deep in here... Mr. Fastest Maxima in Ohio...

At least your car looks better than his, or at least it would if you'd ever clean it. But his wife is pretty hot...

Yeah yeah yeah... For the record of everyone here, Aaron's sense of humor doesn't come through as well on the forum. He's really a smart *** like me

Lemme know about the rims, I think I'm gonna go with the RE-71's. Tire rack just did a test of the Khumos and they rated the Yoko A502's a bit better for performance. I can get a 245/45Z16 RE71 for $88, not bad at all. Might be a bit wide, but it's either that or 225/50...
