exhaust flames?
i saw this old truck and an miata starring eachother down at a red light (i was perpendicular to them at an intersection). their light turns green and the truck just tears the miata up. the truck also shot flames from the dual exhaust on every gear change(i think), blowin it in the miatas face. anyone know how to do this? its not legal either is it?
It's an old trick, most likely...
That of putting spark plugs in the exhaust pipe. The spark ignites the unburned fuel coming through the exhaust, and voila! You have flames shooting out.
Another way of doing it(but I very seriously doubt the truck was using this) is anti-lag for turbos. One big complaint about turbos is the amont of 'lag,' or time it takes for exhaust gases to build up and get the turbine going. One solution some use(especially in the WRC) is to place a fuel injector in front of the turbine. The injector sprays fuel into the turbine wheel, making it spin until enough exhaust pressure is available. The extra fuel is ignited the same way, through the exhaust pipe, resulting in a 2-3 foot long flame coming out of the back.
And yes, both methods are illegal.hehe

I'm no expert but the car was probably backfiring. From what I know unburned fuel exits into the exhaust and is ignited by the heat. Don't quote me on that though
I often see this on mustangs that are modded. Maybe they changed the timing or something.

hehe sounds like fun
so to get the flames out...u just throw any spark plug down the muffler and the flames come out..or do u tape it to the end or wha.. how u do this..is it dangerous?..messes up the car?..and how would u take it out..just wonderin sounds like a hell of a lot of fun..(i love fireeee..i love burning things yeaaaaaa)
dang, my car shoots flames without me having to intentionally set it up. when i decel after sprayin i backfire like crazy and flames come out the back.
to do the deal with the spark plug, you need to get another coil to put the spark plug in and run it to a 12v source with a switch. not sure on the exact placement of the spark plug, but i assume the tip would be ok.

From what I've heard on these old cars and trucks, you can rotate the distributor cap and on some of these it will actually make flames come out when given full throttle. But your timing chain can snap b/c of this...
I've seen........
a couple of Rx7's spit flames at the track, one guy did it in the staging lane, looked pretty sweet, wish my max could do that....maybe I should do a turbo rotary engine swap!
