Can you pull your MT out of gear, without the clutch, while moving?

My friend showed me on his Celica that he can pull his shifter out of gear (M/T) into neutral without using the clutch. He can do this at any speed in any gear. I tried it on my car and it worked on mine too. I went 20mph in 2nd and pulled it right out. It doesn't make any noise and it takes little effort to do. The rpms just fall to idle. Do all manual transmissions do this? Does it hurt the tranny to do this? Does anyone regularly do this when coming to a stop?

Yes they all do it. No it shouldn't hurt it, but I'm sure its wearing something down a little more than compared to using the clutch.

Most people always use the clutch to shift into neutral. Its just easier.

Think about it, with no load on the input and output shafts relative to each other, it should be easy to take it out of gear.

If you want to take it out of gear without the clutch, you do so as soon as you release the gas pedal. It should come right out of gear into neutral smoothly. This way it doesn't put stress on the tranny. I do this all the time when coming to a stop. It's easier than pressing the clutch again just to put it in N.

ok here is my two cents... i really dont think that the transmission should be treated that way.. I am certain that its damaging something, you may not notice now, but remember repeatative stress on anything can lead to damage, damage leads to $$$$ repairs.. so treat the max right, i am learning my leason after doing my share on my maxima and my clutch is gone because of the abuse..i am lloking into 320 bucks for an act stage 1 clutch and another 250 for install.. 550 for me playing around and stressing my max, not worth it..
