The strut and axle can easily be done by yourself. I assume you mean bearing when you say "barren", which should be done by the shop since the labor involved in replacing it is pretty tough.
You could fix everything for much less than $700 if you get the parts and do most of the labor yourself, although the shop probably doesnt wanna hear that.

considering that my dad's mechanic buddy did the same thing on my car and it was just him (axle and one strut), i'd say you can do it with the help of nearby .orgers that have installed suspensions before.
As far as the $700 quote... let's see.
Axle: someone got one for $50 although I've heard prices can go up to $200 or around there. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2432493666
Strut: stock strut shouldn't be a problem, but I would assume it would be either difficult or expensive to acquire only one strut. $50 - $200+ (might as well get all 4 GR2s and pay an .orger with beer and pizza for helping you install)
Barren: bearing? I've heard of $100 - $150 installed for those. Not sure of stand alone price.
You can install all of that yourself. Find someone to help you and treat them to something as payment, or spot them some cash. It'll be way cheaper than a shop and you can learn more about your car in case the problem comes back or migrates to the other side.
