Does Shell Gas mess with your Max?

Well I put in Shell last week and the SES light went on.......I was not happy. I started checking around and saw a bunch of threads at other forums say that Shell gas seems to cause some Maximas to have their SES turn on...

So with the shell gas in the light stayed on the whole time until I filled the tank up with Mobil gas at the quarter empty mark. After 25 miles with the new gas the light went off...
WIERD!!!

I know that some maximas have computer glitch in conjuctions with the emmisions..

I spoke to my wifes aunt who has two maximas and said...her 95's ses light is fragile in the sense that it turns on with shell gas and with regular gas..
but she said in the 01 she not only uses Shell but uses regular and only uses premium on every 5th fill and she never has seen a light

They filled up on Shell last night (the same one I got my gas from)....so we will see....

has anyone heard or had experience with this??

THanks,
Mike

I seriously doubt your SES was due to the Shell gas but it's kinda hard to say otherwise becasue the light came on soon after filling up with Shell and went off soon after refilling with another brand of gas. To be totally sure you should have pulled the code when your SES light came on after the Shell fill-up to see if it was gas related or not. On a good note maybe the Shell gas was so good it caused carbon deposits to break loose and that could cause your SES light to come on if a piece got stuck in the EGR valve but that probably would have also be associated with a rough idle (maybe)

Enjoy and drive thru

I had the same problem. Over the course of a year, anytime I would put in Shell gas, my engine light would come on. I would check the codes and I would get an O2 sensor code + knock sensor. Sometimes I would get both front O2 codes + KS. If I drove off most of the tank and filled up and a different gas station, then turned off the CEL, the light would remain off until I filled up at Shell again. I have not filled up at Shell since I replaced my KS and both front O2s, and I don't plan on it anytime soon.
Currently, I only use Amoco Ultimate 93. Every fillup I go to Amoco. I do not believe it could have been a coincedence that my CEL just happened to go on everytime I filled up w/ Shell gas, and never went on with any other gas. This happened at least 6-8 times.

you probably did jus didnt close your gas cap tightly enuff. it messes wit the pressure or sumthing like that i forget. so i dont kno details who cares. but all u had to do was make sure u close it tightly till it clicks and eventually itll go away. happened to me b4. dont kno if it was shell or not.

I see this thread might go into a which gas is better debate. I use Shell, Amaco, Chevron, Mobil and no problem. I guess it's hard to argue something that has actually happen over and over with the same brand of gas.

How Ironic

I pulled (well, Autozone) the P0420 code before I drove from NC to IN last Wednesday. (they erased the code to turn off the light) This morning, my SES light came back on. I used Shell gas when I started the trip on Wed. I also used it before I came back Sunday. This is weird. I've never paid any attention to it but Shell has bought all the Texaco stations in my area and my light has been on 2x since i've been using Shell gas regularly. (things that make you go hmmmmmn.....)

I use Sunoco 94 for the most part, but my car has seen every type of premium gas out there and never had a problem.

I fill up with shell 93 almost twice a week, and have been ever since I bought the car. no unexplained CEL, and my car runs fine.

all this talk might have me filling up with sunoco a couple of times though, just to see if I feel a difference.

edit: shell's new sales pitch is that their gas yields better mileage (pretty much bs, my gas mileage sucks anyway)... there may be some additives in there that aren't agreeing too well with some people's cars. just a thought.

I actually found a link in regards to this but the page is not available anymore... ( i just read the link last week).
Somebody told me shell modified their formula...

but could it also be related to the certain models? my aunt said her 95 always has the light come on....and her 01 hs no problem on regular...

its well known that certain maximas have computer gliches which causes the SES to come on...
...

I always turn my gas cap until it clicks several times, so that wouldn't be the problem.
Also, this happened to me mostly before Shell's new "better mileage formula" started being advertised.
I highly doubt it is a coincedence.

I use Shell most of the time. No problems and in the summer, I'd average about 26mpg mixed driving.

yea texaco sold out to shell... which sucks.. texaco gas always treated my max great, but when they converted to shell my first tank was a tank of bad gas, my car ran terrible, and every time I try shell since then it doesnt run good at all (93+ octane at all times...). I tried chevron but I get terrible gas mileage from them, so I now only use QuikTrip where I live.. they've never done me wrong at all.

Maybe the location is bad, cause 76 gas kills my car, and Chevron & Shell run great, with more Shell cause my parents have a Shell card.

Never will try Arco. Never.

I only run Arco in my cars. Non of them ping ever and 2 of them are tuned quite extreme. The 3rd has a natural tendancy to ping because of the combustion chamber design, yet with the Arco it does not ping.

Chevron and Texaco (Texaco = Shell) both make my Dads Durango ping, Texaco is worse. It runs flawlessly on Arco.

I am going to try Costco in my car, but if it pings I will go back to Arco. I am running a resistor for the knock sensor and have my timing advanced to 20*. I took it up to 25* but the engine did not like that (alittle too advanced for extreme load conditions (put 4 people in the car and lugged the **** out of it going up a hill.

There is a class action being undertaken up here in Quebec against Shell for gas that destroys gas pumps, especially on Chrysler cars. Shell admitted they used new additives in winter 2001-2002. To be followed.
