cold = shifting thru molasses

Holy carp....its so cold outside that it seems as if I'm shifting thru molasses w/my 5 speed.

any solutions to this? has anyone used synthetic tranny fluid to compensate?

One minute doesn't do it with the temps around here lately. I've been having to warm my car up for 5 minutes or more just o have it be safe to drive. I moved my mom's 2k max this morning and I almost crashed into the curb trying to turn the wheel. The max does okay once you warm it up but DAMN do those fluids thicken up...

This is my second winter using Redline MT-90 tranny fluid. It helps tremendously over the OEM fluid.

I've been meaning to change my tranny fluid since the first time I came to the org. Next summer, or if it's ever warm enough to be outside for more than 5 minutes again, I am totally changing it.

Redline all the way. You have no idea how much it helps in the winter.

I've used Redline, stock and now I've got Amsoil tranny fluid. The tranny always feels stiff when its really cold out.

I do notice less grinding with the synthetic fluids though.

I let my car warm up for about 20 mnutes in this type of cold. Driving off in under that amount of time makes my car feel like the brakes are engaged. The tranny is frozen and the grease in the wheel bearing get stiff as fark. I just drive slow until things come back to life.

Warm up as in letting it sit there and idle? I don't think that's the best idea...you want to get the oil pressure up so things start moving. I start driving it right away (within a minute), and just keep the engine under 2k RPM.

I drive off after a minute most times but I do this to also make sure my tranny fluid is warm too. When temps get this low, I believe you have to extend your warmup times especially in autos.

its not too bad at 0 with the stock fluids... its at -40 where I have a problem at... but then again it happens to all manual cars... I just shift slow and try not to pass 2000rpm until things warm up... ill try to switch to redline when I get the B&M STS

yep, MT-90 in my 2000 5-speed and while it feels a little "molasses-like" in <20F temps, it's still manageable and definitely shiftable.
Usually at those temps, my clutch pedal action feels a little "mushy" too... so I'm impressed that the tranny moves as smoothly as it does.

I have amsoil in mine, its great. I'll be putting it in my Dad's 2000se 5spd aswell. Redline's good too, but I prefer the amsoil.

Yeah, i need to get some Redline, because with the combination of my Exedy Stage 1, Pacesetter STS, and a cold day (in florida people...so like 30-40 degrees, lol) its pretty rubbery and blunt. I get some chatter when im going in reverse getting outta the driveway. As soon as the car gets warmed up, the chatter goes away...

Of course right now, i cant enjoy starting the max in the morning. I have the joy of starting the rental lancer up in the morning . Of course i dont bounce it off the limiter when its cold out now , it must properly warm up...

im running amsoil synthetic...and its not that much better than the stock fluid

i got to -20 one day here...and the first few minutes of driving were hell...it took like 5 mins for the idle to come down to normal

when its this cold...not really much you can do other than start things off slow

Yeah, that definitely is not cost-effective either for the petrol. The whole purpose of warming up the car is to make the cabin comfortable. You can drive the modern cars from a cold start gently, say shifting at 2000-2500, and that will also warm it up as opposed to just idling. That warm up thing came from another era. Just like in the old days a car had a "break-in" period...
