remote start - worth it or a nice toy?

My brother works at best buy and wants to get me a remote start for my birthday. He says it only cost around $120 with his discount and that includes install and a two year warranty from Best Buy. Should I just ask him for the money and get a b-pipe instead?

I like the fact that I can warm my engine up but then again, I live in San Diego so it doesn't take that long. BTW, I have a manual.

Well, it's nice your bro wants to get you something cool for your birthday! If I were you, I would go with the y pipe, your modifications didn't list it, and personally I would put the money towards that..... but then again, it would be cool to have the remote starter - just don't lock yourself out like my sis in law did with her PT Cruiser :-)

Yeah, and you'd have to do a bit of research to do the remote start with a 5spd. . .unless you'rs is a 5 spd like mine,

5spd...including reverse

i love my remote start. I dont see how you could lock yourself out since your holding the keys to make it remote start? Then you can lock/unlock it at will. If I pull up to a store I can make it continue running, pull the key out, go inside, lock it, come outside, unlock it, get in and drive away w/ it never turning off. I like that, might seem pointless to some people but i dont like turning my car on and off alot if im only gonna be somewhere for a second, I also have it set to shut off after 15minutes. You can do it to a 5speed, just leave it in nuetral w/ the parking brake on. I like the engine to be warmed up when I get in. I also like to hear it start from far away and watch my lights blink.....

I don't have one but I look at is more as a cool toy. Its fun but not needed... unless you live somewhere like Canada where its below freezing for 8 months out of the year. If I had the cash to blow, I wouldn't mind getting a Viper 791 though.

Actually, it's nice here in California too. In the summer, I just start my car from my office a little bit before I plan on leaving, and by the time I get inside it's nice and cool! The only problem is that I have to remember to leave my ac on when I turn off the car. But, I live in the middle of the desert during the summer months, so I always have my ac on.

Remote start was the best option I ever put into my car. Warms it up in the ice cold winter, clears my windows before I get to the car. Also gets the A/C cranking on really hot days, you can also use the valet mode and keep in running, LOCKED with heat or A/C cranking while you run into the liquor store.

Well worth the $$$ if you ask me, it's not to show off, but for your own driving pleasure.

Thats a good point, I guess I should say, its really nice to have if you live in a climate where there are extremes.. I'd probably use valet mode more than anything else now that I think about it.

Valet mode actually means that the remote start feature is turned off and only the keyless entry on the remote start works (ie you dont want a valet to be messing with the remote start buttons). You normally have to press and hold the valet switch (probably hidden somewhere inside the car) to set this mode.

Remote start is cool, but not at all necessary. It can be done safely on a 5spd too so that it wont attempt a start if it's left in gear. I did this on my car and it works great.

BUY IT!

Aside from my HIDs, it's the one mod I truly appreciate every single day. It's awsome in the winter to come out to a toasty warm car and I imagine it will be just as nice in the summer.

Care to PM me about this? I've wanted to do remote start, but I don't trust myself to always leave the car in neutral. I haven't really checked much, but it sounds like there's a clutch sense switch and a neutral sense switch?

You won't really have to dumb it down for me if you want to explain..... I'm quick on the uptake

Just remember if you have a chipped key you will have to sacrifice one for the remote start.

remote start

I have black SE with black leather. Despite the tint it gets hot in the summer so I got a remote start. It works fine. The brand is Vivitar and also lowers the windows. I paid $300 with install. It is a COOL toy. Get one especially if you only have the factory alarm.

Definately go with it, I think BB sells clifford alarms...

I have the Viper 791XV (viper and clifford both owned by DEI) and this thing is AMAZING. I've got shock sensors to protect windows, hood and trunk sensors, door sensors, and I even bought a tilt sensor for it so if my car is raised 1 degree from flat the alarm will sound and I will be alerted via my receiver. Auto-start is not only useful, but definately is p.i.m.p. status!

Like others said the remote starter is one of the best investment. You can use it for the winter and summer. I had the Viper alarm and starter installed since day one an LOVE it. Using it all the time!

Hi NJmaxseltd;

The remote start feature you've mentioned on the forum, I'm interested in getting one. What brand and model of the remote start you've installed in your car. I like the features that I can remotely active the A/C when is a hot day and turn on the heater when is cold. Thank you

Remote Starter

Man it's one of the best things you can do if you work at night in a cold climate.
The wife's a nurse and doesn't get out of work til 2AM and she loves having the car warm & the windows defrosted before she gets in.
