Go Vikes! Next year...
I will keep it for a really long time. Even once I get my next car in about 3-4 years, I will keep this car as a daily driver/winter beater because it wont make much sense selling it for basically nothing.
i want to keep my '99 SE until it hits atleast 350,000 miles.
I am happy with the leather interior, auto climate, black on black, in-dash tv and dvd player, and sound system..
The only thing that I might change down the line is the suspension.. I want the GLE suspension, it's alot smoother.

I know there are much nicer cars out there (I sure love those bmw's!), but with the luxury and performance and reliability I can get these and use that money for much more important things for myself or for those who really need it!

This is the way I look at it. I had my 96max for 4 yrs. I think I will keep it as a secondary car(until the VQ dies or rust sets in). I already know it inside out. Can take it apart in my sleep. Very reliable. When looking at new cars it is hard to find something comparable ( used or new). To think the accord, camry and mazda 6, those cars finally have the performance and power of my max but they are 2003 cars. The max is almost 8 yrs older. So I comparable new cars to an 8 yr old car?? That must be a pretty good second hand car. Why not keep it.
I've had my '96 for 3.5 years. It is at 110k right now. I had to rebuild the 5spd (done myself, total cost $100 while I was swapping the clutch) and regrease the starter motor. Other than that it has been perfectly reliable - and even those problems were to correct annoyances, not failure.
I currently intend to drive this car until it costs more money in repairs than a new car payment would cost.
My previous car was a Taurus. I bought it at 30k, drove it until 80k. I replaced the radiator, swaybar endlinks, engine(!), dash switches, driver's window mechanism, speedo (3x) and so on. I made a deal with my wife - if the cost of repairs exceed the cost of the car payment 3 months in a row, then the car gets replaced.
I had about 2 weeks notice of the need to trade the Taurus, and I did a bunch of research. I drove a rented car that had a 5spd and suddenly remembered how much fun it is to drive a stick.
I wanted an ultra-reliable, very fast 4-door, v6 stick with front/rear seat base height adjustment and a good stereo. It had to be a car that nobody would criticize me for having (unlike the ford and the volve I had before - I got sick of people calling it a Vulva and FoundOnRoadDead etc). I heard very good things about the Maxima, and finally decided I wanted a 96/97 SE 5spd. Went to the nearest Nissan deaer - they had two. A black one with 100k, and a white one with 47k that I ultimately purchased that day. I have put 62k on it, and other than the noisy bearings (that most people would just live with) and bad starter (that would grind on the first attempt to start if the car was left overnight int he cold) it has been perfect.
If I got in a wreck and had to replace this car today, I would get a loaded G35X. That car is everything my maxima is right now, and so much more.

I originally bought my 95 w/83k on it with the intention of just making it through college. My loan would be up three years later, when I planned on graduating.
That three years is up at the end of July and I still feel the same way. Part of my lacking desire to mod the car has been for this reason (the other part would be that I couldn't see myself really modding a fwd sedan for performance other than a couple basic bolt-ons).
Apparently my car knew my plans and has decided to fight back. I'm still reeling since November on troubleshooting a clutch hydraulics problem that's kept my car basically undriveable. In the short time I've been able to drive it, I've noticed a gear whine in 2nd gear, and a squeaking in my front right wheel (brake pads had decent life left a couple weeks before when I put my tok blues in, so wheel bearing? Dunno yet.) All this ganged up on me at 108k.
I'm just pleading that I can get out without spending too much money fixing things and sell it come summertime. I don't know how much longer the tranny will go - the 2nd gear whine just started - but if I have to fix that, I have a feeling I'm stuck driving this thing into the ground.
I would like something newer, and something that inherintly handles better/is lighter on its feet - I'll take the sacrifice of space for that since I have rarely ever had more than 1 passenger in my max. It's too bad the selection for newer rwd coupes is so slim. Maybe if I can find a slightly-used RX-8 or a low-mileage S14...

Im keeping mine for a long time also. Im a soph in college right now also, and I dont plan on selling this car anytime. Even when the engine dies, Ill get a new one, and when the tranny goes, it will be rebuilt. This way by the time I need to start settling down I got a still reliable car and everything and wont have that extra $$$ going out.
For quite awhile. Like BSwithTF said, I too know all the creaks and rattles of my car and feel very comfortable in her. Or, until her number of nickel and dime repairs become too great, then I'll pick up another maxima.
My max is a keeper. I've passed the 125K mile mark with it and it was fine up until about 4K miles ago when one of my coil packs went up.
and then my CEL tripped for the knock sensor (replaced). Right after I replaced that my CEL tripped for the rear O2 sensor (replaced). Right after I replaced that, it trips again boost sensor (will be replaced), LR window motor inop (will be replaced), hood and bumper damage (damn this winter), poor gas mileage - 320 - 330 miles per tank (gotta figure that one out)...
so even though it's possessed, I'm keeping it.

I, like a lot of you guys, am a college student too. i am definitely keeping this car till it dies. I guess i would like another car like the G35 coupe or like someone else said the 2008 skyline, but even then i wouldn't get rid of my max. I would make it into a turbo terror, lol, and it would be like my "track" car for the weekends. I think it would be awesome to put a max into the 10's...it's just a matter of $$$.
As far as my max, i can't see myself selling it. The tranny is about done, and there are a few other miniscule things wrong with it (all less than $50 to fix). But when the tranny does decide to go, i'm changing over to a 5-speed. After that, if the motor goes...they're only like 300-400 bucks for a decent low mile replacement....plus install. So why sell it??

Seriously, I bought it new in '99, it'll be paid off FINALLY in 3-4 months, and me & my baby are gonna enjoy at least the rest of this year free of a car note, and going up & over 200,000 miles; i'm thinkin' real serious about getting a 2nd SE-Limited to actually mod (my car has next to nothing in mods), but I need to focus on gettin' COMPLETELY out of debt. I'm too old to be faking like I got crazy loot, juggling two cars and sh*t.

Not anytime soon...
I'll be graduating soon, and this will be my daily for a few years. Once I get my 350z or equivalent, the max will turn into my track (roadcourse car). seats, cage, coilovers, cams...I want an NA track beast

Mine will also get me through college and then I'll keep it around for a few years unless it blows. If I still live in Wisconsin my next car will probably be a small SUV, like a pathfinder or something comprable in a few years. After that I will get a two door rear drive coupe. Probably something like a 350Z.
yep...another sophmore college student....I figure I will keep my car maybe a year or two after I graduate college....when all the loans are payed off....and then I'm going straight for Lexus GS or MB CLK class.....but you never know...considering that my 97 wont be worth much then, I might just keep it. Its my first car....I dont know about yall but I think I might wanna hold on to my first car forever.
I have a 95SE automatic with no mods. It is well maintained. I have replaced the battery and struts once, replaced the steering assembly after I hydoplaned while doing 70mph ( the speed limit ) in Central Michigan in a thunder storm and replaced the shift linkage after my buddy spilled coke on it by accident.
It has 145,000 miles on the odo and still drives like new. Not a rattle or squeak!
I plan on keeping it till it starts giving me trouble!
Just one PROBLEM!
I barely passed the HYDROCARBON emmision by .001 last September. My next test is in September 2005.
Plus my exhaust smells strong when I walk over to the back of my car, like when I am checking the tire pressure. I hate smelly cars in front of me in traffic and am not happy that mine is doing it. I somehow feel like people driving smelly cars drive sub-standard machines or take no pride in their ride.
What can I do to remedy this?
Any help is appreciated.
