Since you want to keep the factory muffler...

Quiet is always good.

Depends.

Do you have a factory muffler or not?

If you run the stock muffler, nono-resonated is fine.

its also cheaper w/o a resonator. i would say the same as above, if you run stock muffler then you wont hear a difference in the cabin. i dont have a resonator on my setup and ive got cattman y, stock cat, custom 2.25 b and stock muffler. you cant hear a difference in the cabin but right up behind you can hear a difference in the tone but it would be completely unnoticeable to someone who had never heard it with a resonator.

If you are planning on runing a stock muffler and plan on getting a y-pipe then i dont recomend it. it will sound like crap. It sounds quest in the cab but i let someone drive my car and i couldn't belive the noise. It was bad. But if your not getting a y-pipe you should still get resonated just incase. I recomend magnaflow, thats what i got and i love the sound(no raspyness)

planning on just y pipe with stock muffler

just for comparison purposes:
w/out resonator is $160 shipped from budget exhaust

w/ resonator is $205 shipped from budget exhaust

eventually i'm going FI, so I was just considering a cattman or frankencar catback instead. So many options available.

maxspeed: so your saying a y pipe with stock muffler sounds bad?

well it sounds bad on a forth gen so i think the same on a fith gen. It sounds quiet in the cab but pops and putters outside the car.

Also i regret not getting a catback. I orderd form budget and i had some fitment issues and had to get 2 new hangers welded and it hung low and was kinda unsatisfied. but only a few people had this problem with budget.

My y pipe, resonated b pipe with 5th gen muffler (stock for you) is the best exhaust I've heard on a maxima so far.

Have you ever heard it outside the car?
Does it make a puttering sound ?

Cause it could be diffrent on the forth gen muffler. My plan was to put a fifth gen muffler but after i ran my exhasut with the stock muffler i was embarised. It sounded like a mo-ped. But maybe to you this sound is "good" .

Yup. My Cattman Y, custom catback, no resonator and 5th gen muffler has got to be the best out there. Although the Greddy catback sounded really good. But it's $$$$$

No B Pipe at all. You will not gain any better time in the 1/4 adding one. You will just get louder. If it were me I would simply get a Y pipe, Test Pipe and leave the rest, especially with the 5th gen muffler. You will have a quiet exhaust and produce the best power all around, especially low end.

My only exhaust mods will be the Y-pipe and the Nonresonated B-Pipe.

ive heard the same thing on a local members 4th w/o a resonator and 4th gen stock muffler. blubyu2k2 and i swapped one night so he could hear his out of the car and i could hear mine. it definately has a different tone even at idle w/o the resonator on my car but i never once heard it putter and that was all throughout the rpm range.

Did he have y-pipe?? man i wish i recorded it cause it would save alot of money for many people.
I thought it sounded nice till i heard it from outside the car.
Im not even talking with resonator or without, im sayin just using the stock muffler with y-pipe , and b-pipe sounds like crap on a 4th gen.

he had a stillen y, stock cat and stock b pipe with the resonator just cut out and replaced by 2.25 piping. maybe its all in the 5th gen muffler because all the 4th gen guys with it say it sounds good without the resonator and most 5th ive seen with stock muffler get the resonator cut out to get rid the horrible crushed parts in the b pipe.

i want the 2.5 inch b pipe solely for the purpose to get rid of the crush bend in the factory catback. I plan to SC soon also and keep it in sleeper mode with the variable 5th gen muffler.

The purpose i ask whether resonated or not is because of the $40 price difference. I'm leaning towards resonated in case I break down and buy a muffler later.

maxspeed: i know the sound you are talking about. We have a org member with a 96 maxima, y pipe + b pipe with factory muffler..... it sounds funny.

Well, you should go resonated quieter and more sleeper.

Yeah, I've heard my car before. Had someone else drive it. At cruising, can't really hear it. At WOT, it screams. I dont really see the problem in that

Tsk Tsk Tsk Larry. You need a 3" exhaust, no cat, no resonator, and a 3" turbo Apexi N1 muffler. It might be a tad loud, but nothing a set of ear plugs, and ear muffs can't take care of.

Yes sleepers OWn!

I had a 97 SE with a budget y, resonated b and 5th gen muffler.... it was quiet driving till ya get on it, then it had a nice rumble to it. Its the best exhaust ive heard on a maxima yet. Im currently looking to trade in my 2003 Jeep for a 2001 Maxima.... first few mods will be an intake then a y and resonated b pipe.

I have a warpspeed y-pipe and stock from there back.........and I cant stand the little high pitched putter/burbble the stock exhuast makes. It doesnt sound good at all. I cant imagine what it would sound like with a non resonated b-pipe lord.....
I've thought about getting non resonated for the simple fact of me buying my own longer resonator and putting it on. I think warpseed only uses a 18" I would prefer a 23-26" resonator. Thats the only reason I can see to buy one without a resonator.

Anybody have a sound clip of their Ypipe, Bpipe, and 5th Gen Muffler setup? I would like to hear this.

I have a Budget Ypipe, and I am considering soon a Budget Resonated Bpipe, with a Magnaflow muffler. But if a 5th Gen Muffler sounds nice, I may have to jump on that.

Make sure you get a resonater, I just got my resonater installed after doing a custom straight through bpipe with a Dynomax muffler, it sounds like **** at times. Now with the resonater its all smooth and sounds nearly like a 350z, it has that nice deep smooth rumble and screams all the way to redline without any raspyness now.

Resonated. I had the joy of listening to 4th gen, with no resonator....it's loud, it's drony, and it's extremely raspy...definately get one with a resonator. Besure it has the resonator that is preforated, and not the ones that have the little notches sticking out in the exhaust stream.
