Back in HS my friend would always drive his dad's max to school once in a while. I got to ride in his dad's ride. It was awesome. I loved it, the combo of speed and luxrey was in this car. Plus at the time I had a 300zx 2+2...we raced and i lost everytime. So, from one experience to another, I just wanted one because it goes faster than some sport cars.

Well, I had no choice. It was and still is my first car. It was the maxima or nothing. Of course I didnt think of the maxima as a great car until I came here and learned more about it. I really wanted a Honda or something else. I thought my car was way too boxy and all my other friends parents bought them either New Camaros, mustangs or Honda Civics. But I love my maxima. Getting a 4th gen some time near the summer

I wanted to get something that was more reliable than my '99 Alero had been, and wanted sporty, something with more power, and most importantly, something I could pimp. I mulled over lots of cars.... early 00+ TT, or A4 (couldn't find or afford low-mileage babied S4s, or even nice 2.8s with stick ). Seriously contemplated an 00-01 Jag S type 4.0 (soo pimp! ) and they were affordable, but was a little concerned as this was going to be my only car for a while and did not want a rwd car for all seasons. My bf was ordering a new Altima at the time, and one day, at the dealership, I saw a polished titanium max on a truck outside and I just fell. Odd shaped rear didn't affect me like it once had, and loved the interior and features (i.e. high content for money). Did not get the polished titanium but got my chance a few months later when they were clearing out 03's and found a beautiful gray lustre. So, my car, brand new, was actually about the same price, or a little less than, a previously owned 00 or 01 S-type. No pimp Jag factor, or as luxurious, or v8, but Jag didn't feel quite as sporty to drive, nor did it have HID's. 9 months later I still love the car and don't regret it. It's been nothing but good to me, no recalls even (couple of studders but have not been stranded ) good car overall.

I voted hand me down (which wasn't a free handme down, heh, paid $5k for it), but I also wanted it.
I learnt to drive in it, then my parents brought a Patrol, and they offered the Max to me instead of using it as a trade-n. Very happy I did that
The things I like about it is that it surprises everyone that rides in it with me. People around here automatically label it a "typical family car with no go", a family car may be it's typical role, but go it has, heh. I can't help but smirk when people after they say insult my Max and tell me their little Mazda will kick my Max's *** .
I also like the fact (as mentioned earlier) that Maxima's aren't found on every corner, unlike Falcons, Commodores, Skylines and Camrys are around here. It's reliability is another, it's got 2470000 kilometers on the clock and it still feels as strong as the day I first drove it, all that's died on it is the starter motor which was relatively cheap to fix.

I liked maximas every since high school, when guys were putting tires and rims on their 2nd Gen. that stuck out about 2 inches from the body. That was about 11 years ago when I thought that look was the ****. I bought my max because I need a car I would be comfortable in on the road, that was not a 4 banger and since it was going to be pre-owned, it needed be dependable. The only other car I would have bought would have been the 95 Chevy Impala SS.

I got mine as a hand me down. My dad bought this car brand new in '88 and drove it until 2001 which was the beginning of my senior year of high school. He handed the car to me and got an '02 Impala LS. I literally grew up with this car and always felt that there was something cool about it. I never knew how badass maximas were until I made friends with a guy who told me about the performance aspect of maximas. Needless to say, I fell in love with the Maxima and haven't looked back. Will buy another maxima when I sell this one. The looks, performance and comfort balance are awesome.

By the time the 1998 model year came around, these cars were crazy cheap. It made no sense to buy a used one (96) for 19 when a 5-spd SE with every option went for low 22's, so what the heck, I bought it. 6 years later I realize that even that price was not good, but we learn.
I was gonna say "bang-for-buck" doesn't exist with Nissan products, but I guess I'm thinking along the lines of new. There isn't one NEW Nissan product that provides that. But you probably mean used so I guess it's still there. 2002 SE's for mid 15's, good for the buyer but the original owner sure got clobbered good.

I agree with chillinmax everywhere u go peopla are souping up honduhs and the maxima is rare and looks like an ultimate sleeper. I started liking the maxima since the 95 max came out because i was older. That went on till 2001 when the AE came out I was like that car is hot. Then 2k2 came i was looking for cars for like 2 weeks looking at Accord V6's but alot of them had high mileage so we then decided to look at a new car. The first car I looked at was the max and fell in love wit it was going to buy an altima but didnt like it and not that much less than the max. Now I still love the max after 2 yrs I still feel like its the first day i have this car.

wanted a reliable, good looking, powerful, comfortable, good on gas, affordable sedan... there was nothing else that fit all these categories as good as the maxima.
most practical all around car, period.

The only thing these kind of polls fail to reflect is "the why not own a Maxima opinion."
There are just so many reasons to own a Max, that there should be a poll as to Why not Own a Maxima.
It is the best bang for the buck, it's big enough for 5 people and groceries, it looks deceptively slow (moreso for a family), it has the best V6 in the worlds.
It isn't too expensive to maintain, they last forever when well taken care of, they look good when especially when you mod them with cosmetics such as bodykits, etc.
The car is just a great deal for the money and if you wanted something that offered this much in just about any other car then you'd may as well start thinking about where you are going to get the extra 7 to 10k to get into that BMW or Audi and that means that you are really out of this class of car for the money.

I was going to buy a 2000 Civic EX(w/33k on it) but the guy had to wait for a couple days to give me an answer. In those couple days I found my stick Maxi(w/53k on in) 160 miles away from my house and drove with my dad to get it. The civic guy called a day later saying that he'd sell it to me but i already got a car... sucks for him
I definitely got it because it was a 5spd and beacuse its a major Sleeper!

Because if you are talking new, the only way you don't spend 10 grand more to get a 325i instead of a 3.5SE is you don't have the 10 grand to begin with. That's the situation for most people who buy new. Because once again, 20% down, new 325i, ranges from $575 to $900/mo., with the former being 60 months and the latter being 36 months. I do not seriously believe that people shopping for a Max can even afford an entry-level BMW, it is not an alternative.
Of course I'm speaking of something realitively new like a 330i<this is more or less the BMW guys would compare a Max against (based on dollar range) or a 530i<this is more the size of the Max which is the class it is designed to compete in.
Of course if you are talking used a BMW isn't going to be 7 to 10k above but then again with a 328 you aren't even in the same league as the Max as far as the size of the car and power are concerned, are you?
An entry level G35 is almost 7k cheaper than an entry level 330i, so I know that it has to be that much more over a Max especially after you start adding their options, even adding options on a G will only bring you around to the entry level BMW 330i or midway at least.
The bottom line is that the Max just has so much more to offer, sure the BMW is RWD and has that nameplate to go with it but when it is all said and done, is the extra 7 to 10k worth that?
Not to us poor folks, it isn't.

I got a Maxima because I had a 1998 GMC Sonoma ZR2, and in the 6 months I had the truck, I put $4100 into fixing it, everything that could have gone wrong did. I sold that on Christmas break and needed to find a car fast before school started again. I had been looking at Hondas, but there wern't any nice ones in my area. My dad had a Black 1992 Maxima several years ago and I liked the car. He sold that Maxima.
I was looking on Autotrader and found a Maxima in Kalmazoo. We ended up calling the guy and meeting him in Big Rapids at 12am on a Sunday night/Monday Morning and test drove the car and decided to buy it.
I didn't really like the look of the car a first, but now I love. I thought, cool now I have a car I won't put a bunch on money into modding, then I discovered this site, now I keep finding new things I want to add to my car.

Parents bought the '95 Max brand new in 1995. It was my mom's car then 2 years ago they got a '02 Max so it became my dad's car. Then my dad got a Civic Si, so the car came to me in September.
I have loved Maximas ever since the 1990 one we had when I was a really little. I can remember that car very well, good times in that thing. I couldn't ask for a better car, ok maybe if it was a 5-spd than I would be extremely happy. One day though, one day.

Criteria for choosing:
Manual, 6 cyl. power, comfortable, sporty, reasonable $$, more space than my first car (CRX) = Maxima.
I actually didn't know how cool Maxima's were until I started looking for a new car. Had my head stuck too far up a Honda tailpipe.
Other choices:
95-99 Accord - Too slow, or no MT
93-2000ish Prelude - Too much of a biatch car.
90's BMW 325iS - Decent price, too expensive to maintain.
90's BMW 5 Series - Decent price for high mile cars... and well, they are Boats unless you can afford an M5.

Because I'm dumb. I'm a young guy, don't need the space, but I saw the stock HP/weight rating and the reliability ratings, and thought they were impressive. By the time I figured that there's more to a car than just stock hp ratings, it was too late. Potential is more important. I should've bought a turbo awd DSM. I could be running 12s now instead of driving a slow, NA FWD car. It's alright. At least it's reliable. I still like it.
