Never thought changing brands of gas could solve the ping problems until now..

For years I have always used one particular band of gas because the station was near my office. Despite using 93 octane, always had some pinging with my 95 max and 2000 I30.

Always read that all gas is the same, it comes from the same plant, and only the additives that keep the engine clean are different from brand to brand.

Well, I no longer believe it.......

Recently the station I've been using closed and I started using Mobil gas from a newly built station.

Guess what, no more pinging! First time since 1995 I can drive and not feel/hear the pinging! Still using 93 octane as before.

Any others notice improvement using Mobil?

Even gas from the same name stations is different from one to another. I used to go to this station a few blocks from my house and buy gas there. Never had problems. Then when starting school there was the same brand station but the gas was like $.20 cheaper per gallon so I got that. Well right away I get a O2 sensor code and a KS code and my car is sputtering like crazy. I only bough like a half-tank full so I went to MOBIL accross the street and filled it up all the way. Everything went back to normal.

i use chevron.........and its preaty good, most of the gas stations get water into their tank so that's why sometimes they are bad, but something about chevron that has good gas and something about their underground tanks.

Gasoline is not the same even when using the same brand from town to town. Just have to try it out and go back to the one that works best in your car even when the price might not be the cheapest.

I just try to get gas from the newer looking places. I try to stay away from the older crappy looking stations. I figure if their bathrooms are dirty so is their gas.......

I'm from NJ too, specifically South Jersey. It was most of the Shell stations that suddenly closed in our area. On day they were gone, painted gray, and all the lights and even the pumps were gone. It was strange because it happened suddenly overnight. The week before the attendant was even trying to get me to sign up for a Shell gas card. Glad I declined!

But since it "forced" me to change to the new Mobil station and my VQ has never purred so well, I'm a happy camper!

gas is all the same. BUT many stations lie about the octane ratings of the gas in their tanks. Trust me-I used to work for a large gas retailer and the gas oct in the tanks did not meet what the sticker rating said.

What are your opinions on Exxon? It's what my family uses on all of their cars and I haven't experianced problems, but if somethings better I'll change it for that fact alone. heh

Never had a problem with Mobil, but I use Shell 93. Couldn't pass up the 5% rebate Shell is usually 5-10 cents higher than cheaper stations like Marathon, but it's about the same or cheaper after the rebate

I usually fillup by my mom's work, but I might try the remodeled Mobil station soon. They cleaned the tank(s) and setup the newer stations (1 hose with octane selection instead of 3 different hoses). There is also a new Citgo opening up soon near me (brand new tank).

Ping ...sounds like marbles in a tin can when you accelerate on a slight incline.

kratz74 may have the answer. I wonder if what I was buying all these years wasn't 92 octane as I thought. Maybe the 92 octane i'm getting now at the new Mobil is really 92 and that's why the ping is gone.

The ticking you hear is probably the fuel injectors, a very rapid ticking. I believe pinging sounds like those ****ty cars in the movies, you know when they stop or turn off the car and you still hear this pinging.

All I have ever used is Exxon, Mobil or Shell in my Maximas. Nary a problem with pinging at all.

I usually fillup at the Shell in Wood Dale (kind of close to my mom's work) or the one on McCormick/Howard. I'm waiting for the Citgo to open on Montrose/Pulaski

I hear you on the Mobil tip.

Like others I usually fill up at a good gas station that I past regularly in between home and work, that station happen to be a Amaco. Recently at work I was re-assigned to another location which put me on the other side of town. So on my new commute to work I past several gas stations, Shell, Chevron, Mobil, etc. Out of all the different stations I pass I've tried all the gas (with decent results) except for Mobil. From the very first time I filled will Mobil and pulled out the station I could feel a difference. No big hosre power difference but just a subtle difference in how the engine was idling and cruising.

Speaking of gas stations, has BP bought out Amaco? I've notice a few Amaco's are changing from their red and blue color/logo and putting up green and yellow BP color and logo.

On a side note I've been re-re-assign back to my original work location so I think I'm going to get off my usual commute route in-order to find a Mobil station. I'm convinced

Although this thread is almost 20 years old, lol, I just did a Google search on different brands of gas and pinging. This came up. I have been pinging with Mobile in my 97 for a while while still using 93 octane. I switched to Shell and the pinging is gone!

Don’t know if any of you all have Circle-K stores in your areas, and I’m not certain who supplies their fuel, but they market a gasoline with an additive package they call ‘miles’ … my car friggin loves it.

I stick to 87 octane, never had a problem, but I do regular oil changes and avoid ethanol like the plague. Gas tech today is better than it was then, but that ethanol.... gunk magnet!
