anyone painted their front lip by themselves?? (black)
anyone painted their front lip by themselves?? (black)
im just wondering. With black, I dont thnk there's an issue with paint matching... but maybe because there's so many grooves and stuff, it's hard??
how does a shop prep and paint the lip??
i find it hard to justify spending 150+ for a professional good paintjob when im sure within a couple of months I will have rock chips and such on it. any opinions or advice wuld he appreciated.
thanks

I painted my whole body kit on my 97...

i bought the paint from www.paintscratch.com along with clear coat.. all together about 100 bucks worth of clear coat and paint..
i also had access to a spray gun and needed some paint thinner.. needed a new bit for the spray gun so the paint would spread easier..
all in all.. it came out okay, with 2-3 coats of paint, and 2 coats of clearcoat.. but it was not very durable.. chipped very easily.. especially the front lip.
The money you will save is not worth it.. because you'll have to do it again soon enough..

I've spraypainted my front lip numerous times already; the cost of professional painting every year is simply not worthwhile (to me). I've been considering looking for spraypaints with flex-agents pre-added. While the black from spraycans are not as glossy (another clear coat might help, but I skip this), it's good enough. I must have a half dozen coats on top of the first pro-paint job already...

I did some reading prior to doing this and was told that primer may not be needed if there was already a coat of paint that I was painting over. In such a case, sanding it down real nice and cleaning it with an alchohol based solution would work fine. If you buy the lip or whatever plastic piece it is you want to paint, brand new.. it is usually sold already primed. I did not use primer and even if it would be better to use it, I think it boils down to the kind of paint that is used and how it is applied.
my coats were relatively thin. The paint is not the same type of paint that bumpers or other parts are painted with, it was more thin and less durable. If you can get access to some real paint, it might work out alright. But next time, it's unlikely i'll be painting it myself again. Although if i had good paint, i'd give it a shot, why not.
Paint work is preperation and taking your time to do it right. Sanding between coats lightly is a good idea, giving it plenty of time to dry up. Reason a lot of paint work comes out like **** from body shops is because they do not prep it right, nor do they take their time doing it.. they rather rush it and in the end it comes out as a crappy job.

I spray painted mine and got nothing but compliments. It won't win any car show awards but whatever you will scrape that lip all the time and will need to touch it up.. 150$ for painting that is not worth the money at all.
Mine Stillen lip is spray painted. I recently redid the paint in a glossier finish. When I got my lip, I sanded it lightly, then sprayed on bumper primer spray with a flex agent. I then painted the lip with black bumper spray paint with a flex agent. Both these sprays were available from the local autoparts store for about $5 a can. The black bumper spray was a bit flat and recently I sanded down the lip again and I painted it with glossly black paint (no flex agent). Now the lip has quite a bit more shine, but it doesn't quite match the super gloss of my professionally done sides.
Here is a pic of the lip with bumper spray:

I very happy with the results and people who see my car wouldn't know the difference. For $20 I'm happy. The paint holds up completely fine and doesn't chip. I wacked some curbs and scrap it a lot. I touch it up yearly. For a black or flat white car, I don't see why you'd get the lip professionally done.

great, thanks for sharing your experience. I was reading everyone's opinions and I was more leaning towards getting it done professionally.
The thing is, my car is black, and my paint (especially the front end) is full of rock chips. If i am just getting the lip for now, I thought i could get away with painting it from a spray can.
If I do end up doing a ****ty job, I can sand it down and have it done professionally, right? I might as well try then.
when paniting the kit there is a coat that u put frists its called a flex coat because its like a bumper it will flex whit out this the paint will chip incold or warm weather most palces wont spend the extra buck but wont have a issiues charging u
8 year old thread bumped........SMH SMH SMH
just go out and buy rustoleum paint and clear coat. apply a few coats of each and you be good. just make sure you dont put to much on or itll drip and then look halfa**ed. proffesional is completely unneccisary, but in the end its up to you
yeah....................no. Sure, rattle canning can look good but pro job>rattle can...all day
Not really, his remarks were in relation to the topic. I agree it is an old thread to bump though but I dont remember seeing a rule that states you cannot reply to thread after a certain period of time.
Its not like he was just making a random off the wall comment.
This post seems more pointless then his,..
