is it useless for me to get a y-pipe if i'm not going to get a new exhaust system and headers?

why?....BECAUSE

jk. Well, apparently the stock y-pipe is the most restrictive with its material, volume, crimps, and junk inside the pipe. The stock header seems to be fine, no one has developed an aftermarket header so I'd say it probably is just fine the way it is. From what I've seen, headers is more of a 4 cylinder's gain. Besides do you realize how difficult it would be to change the Maxima's headers. I think everyone's word and dyno print-outs supplies enough evidence that the Y-pipe is a great performance mod. I'm looking to get a Ca/NLEV cattman ss y myself.

The y-pipe is hardly useless. Dyno's have proved that over and over again. Like Kevin said, no one has manufactued an aftermarket header for the Max. And again, like Kevin said, it would be hell tryin to install the thing. Y-pipe is one of the best performance mods you can get for the Maxima, excluding Nitros or a Supercharger. No offense, but your friend doesn't know what he's talkin about.

1. I can tell you from personal experience that a y-pipe with an otherwise stock exhaust system makes a very noticable difference.

2. Your friend drives a FORD ESCORT.....I wouldn't listen to a word he says.....my friend drives a FORD TAURUS SHO (that for some reason he thinks is really fast...even though I kick his *** all the time) and he said the same thing to me before I got my y-pipe.

3. none of the y-pipes get rid of the Cat....they just get rid of the pre-cats. The pre-cats are there becuase the cat doesn't work until it gets VERY hot...and in the meantime the pre-cats clean the air so it gives off less emmisions when it's cold. But, who needs pre-cats!! Unless you are a tree-hugger or something. Once the car is warm the cat functions normally...and you can pass emmision tests no problem. Anyway, the y-pipe is the most impressive modification that I have installed on my Max.

Go with it

hey BriGuyMax

Do you plan on get a B-pipe when you pu the 2000 Maxima muffler on? I ask because my next project is my exhaust system, which will consist of the Cattman SS y-pipe, 2000 Maxima muffler, Stillen B-pipe, and RT Cat. I'm looking to spend under $800 for all this.

to put it simple, your friend is completely wrong...

the y pipe is the best upgrade for a maxima not because of the size of the pipe, but because it takes out the two precats... these precats are not the same as your regular cat, they are extra. The stock regular cat is not too bad and I would not replace it unless you have already replaced your entire exhaust and intake system.

Aftermarket Y-pipes allow for much better airflow, which equals more power and it's lighter than the stock Y-pipe. Stillen claims an extra 20hp from the Y-pipe, but I'm pretty sure it isn't that high, but it's still one of the best bang for the buck power mods.

The Y-pipe is w/o a doubt one of the best bang for the buck on the Maxima. It has been dynoed & provened to make more HP. The stock y-pipe is very restrictive, it holds 2 precats. You can go with either Stillen, Cattman, or even WSP Y-pipe. No matter which brand, you will still make a good amount of HP.

HP figures vary on each car/mods but you will def. notice a big difference. The aftermarket Y-pipe will eliminate 2 precats. You can use a R/T car or a straight pipe or even your stock cat and leave it in.

They don't make headers for our cars either.

BTW, your boy's Ford ZX2 will not beat your max. Tell him to stop inhailing the fumes from his "new escort".

The y-pipe should also increase the life of your engine significantly...
