HELP! check engine light on

I've got a 96 max with 43,000 miles on it and it's been running fine. now all of a sudden the check engine light comes on but it still runs good. any ideas what I can check before I take it to a shop and they charge me out the *** to fix something small. PLEASE HELP Thanks
