Your biggest problem would be seeing if all the electronics are they to run the auto. I take it you found a new car and it's a 5spd and you want a auto.

it shouldn't be that hard...pretty simple in fact...you just need to make sure that the tranny shifting cable can be installed...manual tranny computer should work...because it won't be "looking" for the auto tranny...but you might need the auto tranny computer...(shameless plug...I have one if you need one). Oh...and new axles...but that should be it...I think

You need:

Auto Tranny
Auto tranny ECU harness
TCM
Axles
Shift linkages
Shifter asembly
etc etc etc

With all of that, it is swap-out swap-in. The only thing that may be somewhat difficult is running the shift linkage through the firewall (as there may not be one to begin with).

Hey ramius I think the auto tranny ecu harness is my problem. Where can i get one. Dixit and I were talking and we think that harness may be part of the main harness.

I think that you're right...that its in the main harness....although...it may be included with your current harness...u might want to check. Nissan did weird stuff with the harnesses...

Well I figured out that most of it can be rewired yourself in that you'd have to run a rack of wires from the TCM to the tranny itself. But then as I told Corey last night, you will also have to tape a couple other wires like power for the TCM, Ground, 2way communications line to the ECU. There are quite a few things that this is actually 5x harder than a Auto-to-5spd swap. Mainly because the auto relies on the TCM to tell it what to do. We dont have mechnical valvebody's, if we did, this would be easier to swap over.

I hope this goes well for you.....some lucky automatic owner will get a 5-speed and you will have a bullet proof auto with turbo.....

CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT DONE.....when is custommaxima gonna show the project?? I was over a year since they began to tease us about it.

I have a 97 auto ecu if you are interested. I even have the mini auto ecu brain in my dash still, just not hooked up. I would be willing to do a wire harness swap with you too if you are up for it. I have the auto harness in my car still from the the swap. I have been on the lookout for the 5-speed harness to replace it. I have a second car, so if my car is down for a few days/week it is not a biggie.

Let me know.

Based on 3rd gen experiences, it would be wayyyyy easier to swap the whole harness. Donalds done it a few times now, and it seems like it would be a good swap (he wants the 5spd harness, you want the auto, and downtime isnt that big of a problem for him, so its a win win )

the cost depends on how much you can get the tranny for. i looked around at the junkyards by shea stadium in ny..theres a lotta places around there. the parts for a 5 speed tranny vary from like 800 on the low side to like 1200 or so. i think the tranny i got was from a 2001 with low miles on it
and then i got the parts and went to jeff at maximum tuning. i bought the exedy street clutch and the B&M short throw shifter too and he installed it for around 1000 (100 more for me because i have tcs and its a PITA to install because of it supposedly).
www.maximumtuning.net
i dont think i need to say much about jeff..hes well liked around here on the org too..checkout the feedback section.
