Rattles be GONE!
Check this;
last week my car developed what must have been the mother of all rattles. It was apparently coming from deep inside the center of my dashboard. I looked thru the threads on this forum and found talk of a pillars, trunks etc. There was dash rattles as well, but they were relatively easy to find and fix, like the glove box, radio, vents. Mine was none of those. Smacking the dash didn't make the rattle happen, and holding any part of the dash didn't stop it, either. I even spent this past weekend taking my dash apart to find it. I took out all of the center, the Bose, the climate control, the center vents. Also took out the glovebox. I started the car, the rattle was still there!! It gurgles at idle( 600 or so rpms), and when I go over bumps, it kinda jangles. Those 2 observations should have clued me into where it was coming from (not the dash), but I missed it. Anyhow, I dropped my car off with my mechanic who was going to replace my rear brakes and fix my sticking e-brake on the right rear wheel. I mentioned the rattle to him, but his suggestion was what I had already tried, pulling the dash apart. So anyway, I leave my car with him and pick it up later. I'm driving the car and find that the rattle is GONE! I purposely drive over bumps to make sure, and it is really gone! I call him up and tell him he did something. He did, the rattle was my exhaust. He said that somehow my heat shield above the cat had gotten bent up and was touching the body. He bent it back. So the sound I thought was in the dash was really below my center console.
Morale of the story, for those rattles you can't seem to figure out where they come from, be sure to check your exhaust. I'm glad my mechanic did. I never would have thought of it.
Enjoying my quieter ride,

I am curious because people say their 4th Gen's have rattles but i havn't seen it..
how loud do you listen to your radio? or do you drive with it on at all..
Reason I ask is because my radio is so loud...I doubt i would ever hear rattles.. I dunno
maybe i have rattles maybe i don't

My Bose can easily drown out the rattles, except for that damned annoying exhaust one when I went over bumps. For that one I had to pump my system to at least 50 watts of its 200. But the thing for me is, there are times I like to ride and all I hear is the VQ revving away, the rush of the wind over my car and the roar of the tires over the road.
