Is it true that the Maxima may be phased out?

Nothing wrong with the new Altima at all. Nissan is making it into the car it should be (and what the Maxima used to be)...

JohnDoe89 why do Altim's suck. Altimas are reliable, fast, Good product of Nissan, and is putting in a large amount of what the Maxima used to do. I have never heard one complaint about any Altima other than their wear and tear items. Other than that what can you saw unless you owned one and give us visual proof of your claim.

VQ powerplant was awarded one of the top 10 engines how many years in a row? GT-Rs in japan even use them instead of the RB26 because of their reliability..i dont think the max will get a V8 anytime soon, even if it was all aluminum its just extra heft and gas. no matter what the future holds for the maxima its legacy will most certainly be kept alive by enthusiasts like us. i still go around touting the maxima as THE original 4DSC which no other sedan can claim. the 6th gen. was made with being a luxury flagship in mind...just think ourselves fortunate they didnt try anything extreme and try and make the maxima like the VW Phaeton which is a waste of VW badges and would've sold much more with 4 rings on the grill.

I raised about the longevity or viability of the Max in a thread I posted a month ago. From the posted replies, it seems quite clear that Nissan will keep the Max, albeit at a much reduced capacity, and not as its former bread and butter flagship.
In fact, from the looks of how things are going (low sales volume, bigger interior, more so called luxury pretensions, demographics of 04 Max buyers, etc), it is apparent that the Maxima is equivalent to the Avalon, and will probably remain so unless Nissan sees fit to reconfigure the Maxima into its former 4DSC so as to retain Max enthusiasts. If you look at other Maxima boards and forum, you will see that many former Max owners are now TL owners.

Or 2002+ Altima owners. I know quite a few that have purchased the Altima over the 5th-6th gen Maxima...

Well let's remember. The MAxima is now a gussied up Altima (built off it's platform) where the previous models had their own platform. Since it does not cost much anything to build a 6th gen MAxima (same platform, same VQ engine, now built in the USA) the Maxima should stick around as I am sure they are making money on em.
Yes, they have totally ****ted on the Maxima name with the 6th gen but Nissan is a business.
Plus, Maximas were known for their value. Not anymore, since the 6th gen is a 34k car loaded.
The Maxima won't go anywhere soon. But it's now targeted at a whole new demographic.
I am thinking NIssan sees current Maxima owners moving up to the G35.

all i can say is ive been driving maximas since 1988 before i had i liscence and ive loved them ever since. and ill keep driving them till they stop making them. its a car with a long history and a great name which is why it will remain as one of the greats if its ever phased out.(knock on wood). yeah the altima is good. but it almost wasnt. it evolved from the stanza(imo was the "baby"maxima) nissan is getting alot of input from the general public and its shareholders on what people want in a car. but i think they missed the memo when it came to making the 6th gen maxima. at any rate, the maxima has been holding its own at the top for over 20 years now. if it gets moved off to the side then thats fine. but be ready for a comeback!! (remember foreman vs holyfield!! the giant came back!) and thats what will happen with the maxima. nissan got a little too happy with the design and options for the altima and the rest of the fleet for that matter. and forgot what the pourpse of the maxima was. thats what i think part of the flack the 6th gen got when it came out. i belive that there gonna sit back and think on the maxima good this time and when the 7th comes out we should all be happy.
tip the wait staff ill be here all week!!!!

its true and sad that the new maxima has become a luxury car that lost much of its sport attitude regardless of additional horsepower. But i definatley dont think that the maxima should get phased out and replaced by the Altima. It doesnt seem like Nissan would profit from that, because most previous Maxima owners looking for a trade in would never be able to lower themselves to an Altima regardless of its capabilities. I could be wrong though i havent checked the numbers, but i know that when im ready for a new car i might get a new maxima, but if they phase it out there is no way im getting an altima. i would have to look at another company unfortunately. besides, in my oppinion the newer altimas look like ****, its like it cant make up its mind whether to be a fat sports car or a cheap luxury car. At least the Maxima looks good.

The need for the Maxima is disappearing. With the move towards increased luxury (and price), the 6th generation Maxima is encroaching on the G35's position, and the V6 Altima and Altima SE-R are replacing it as Nissan's 4D sport sedan. One method I see for resolving this situation is to offer the V6 Altima in various trims (a luxury version, sport version, and the SE-R) and convert the Maxima to a 2D FWD sport coupe/convertible (poorman's G35 coupe). There is no real reason for the Maxima to continue without substantial redesign.

Is the I35 platform used by any other Nissan cars? If not, it may be too expensive to keep and Nissan may decide to cut the I35 altogether. To elevate the Max to compete with the ES 330 and TL may be a bit of a stretch because Nissan is not a luxo name plate and does not offer better service nor a longer warranty. Nissan needs to think carefully before repositioing the now awkwardly placed Max.

Your point is well taken. I agree that Maxima is difficult to position as a genuine near-luxury entry, due as much to Nissan not being perceived as an upscale brand as differences in service quality and warranty length. It is at best a near-near-luxury alternative, a poor man's luxury car. However, the reality is that many consumers cross-shopped the Maxima and the TL in the past, and may do so again! This is particularly true if interior refinement, torque steer, and (perhaps) the warranty were improved.
