they have a little tint meter device that has a slit in it big enough to slide the window into the slot and it shoots a laser through it and gives them the info...there is also one to test out rear windows that is 2 separate pieces...i dont think many police have that kind though, just the basic one to test roll down windows

Not all cops rely on a tint meter to give you a ticket.

They can ticket you without measuring the tint. Friends of mine have gotten tickets without the measurement, one time they put the license on the other side of the window and said if they couldn't read it, it's illegal.

But they do have a small digital device,at least NYPD does... the cop instructed me to roll down my window 1/2 way.. wiped it on both sides and put the tint meter to the edge.. it read "12.5%" and my percentage was supposed to be 20... that's because the factory glass is already slightly tinted.. putting 20% layer over it, will make the overall look darker than 20%..

In NY, the law is quite strict... basically if the officer can tell the windows have been tinted, it's illegal.

A police officer pulled me over because it looked too dark. Didn't get a ticket, but he didn't use a light meter, just his naked eye.

But my windows are pretty dark, so I didn't argue

That all depends on your individual state. This site has pretty good info on the laws for each state, I'm not certain that it's 100% accurate though.

In my state, Ohio, you must have 50% or greater on the front two windows, and 35% on the back 3 windows, i have 20% all around. I think that that is ridiculous that if a cop just thinks that the tint is too dark and issues you a ticket using just his naked eye, but i guess you shouldn't argue with the cops, just take it to court. The reason i was asking is becasue i think the place that did my tint tinted my front windows lighter than my back and it annoys me so i wanted to find out the percentage of the tint, but i guess it will cost me a ticket, which is not worth it

This is a great info, Businesss810. I didn't know about it. Since I was trying to find out about CA laws. Thanks for the link.
