Well last night I finished installing the 2000 maxima gauages into the rx-7 dash. Some cutting required I'll have to take some pics. I think it looks really good. Now I just need to install the dash into the car again. Maybe tonight.

what trannies did you look at to see if they bolted up?

from what I know the SR bolts to the KA the RB bolts to the VQ

did you try the KA tranny?

awesome project, I am researching doing the same kind of swap in a 240 and having someone like you who dealt with all the problems already... kinda helps in my lil project

I know the Q45 trans does not fit (auto anyway) and the 300z does not fit. My brother has an sr20 engine trans (out of a car). I didn't check it close but the bell housing did not look even the right dia to fit.

I have an auto cad drawing of the aprox bolt pattern for the engine if you are interested.

I originally thought of making an adapter plate and using the rx-7 trans. That started looking like a headache and I ran across a 350z trans.

2001+ pathfinders (VQ3.5 engines) should work as well.

I've exchanged e-mails with someone looking to put one in a z car and there is also some info on www.hybridz.org about VQ Swaps. I haven't actually read about anyone actually doing it before.

Could be I'm the first to put one in a rear drive?

Yes! The only VQ30 I know in america that are RWD have custom trannies, like straight cut gears. OMG the madness, you need ear plugs to drive in those freakin cars, gears make so much noise.

VG30DE- 210HP, same engine as the 222HP VG30DE used in the Z32 300ZX Naturally Aspirated. Only difference between the two is the exhaust system which was more free flowing on the Z.

VG30DE. It even had dual throttlebodies I think, and a true dual exhaust.

Latest update:

I have the alternator working, speedometer working and I think I fixed the starting problem (the starter was not shimmed right and was binding). I have even started to install some of the stereo.

I drove the car to work all last week. I expect to keep driving it every day now unless something breaks. Saturday My little brother came over with his BMW and we ran the cars together. mine was faster of course and I don't even have the variable intake hooked up.

I still need to install the front sway bar, new rear struts and the Variable intake actuator. Also lots of little stuff like trim, stereo, cruise, p/s etc.

Looks to me the project has been a success.

My impressions so far are the car is much quicker that when it was rotary power. I enjoy being able to spin the tires quite easily. I am not happy with the 350z gear box. The mazda gear box (after I rebuilt it anyway) was much smoother and easier to shift. I may have to rebuild the 350z box. Right now the car is not as refined as before the swap but that is mostly due to the detail work that I haven't finished. I have enjoyed the fact that the Nissan engine does not flood like the rotary engine. Overall I think it is going to be a fun car to drive.

You'll gain ~20whp with the VIAS working.

What's left to make it work?

I have to put the actuator back on. yes I know it doesn't come off. Well not normally. I cut the actuator off for clearance with the firewall (I also cut off the bracket that would hold the swirl control solenoid). I will relocate the VIAS acutator and run a longer rod or cable from the actuator to the valve. when modifiying the intake I glued on fittings for vacume lines to hook the vacume from the actuator to the VIAS solenoid. It shouldn't be all that hard to finish I just have to take the time to do it. So far it just hasn't made it to the top of the list of things to do. Hopefully soon.

My family calls it "red car", since I have a red and blue Rx-7. Not too exciting I know.

It's working name (computer files etc) has been "Monster car". For a time it started getting the title Garage Queen.

I am leaning toward maX-7.

Max-7 is what would make sense.. I think mazda already has or will be making an MX-7. Do you have any pics of the way it looks right now?

My thread on a different board has some pics. See link below. From the outside the car looks just like a standard Rx-7. Under the hood pretty much everything has been changed. The only thing on the interior that is very different is I put in a 2K maxima instrument cluster. Otherwise the interior looks like an average rx-7.

Well I have been driving the car for awhile and having a good time. I did some # gathering with a G-tech pro competition.

I still don't have the VIAS working and I am running on some snow tires that came with the car (I've been busy and out of town)

Anyway with the current set up I managed a 5.9 0-60 time.

In my brothers 2004 SRT-4 with the same G-tech he got a 5.8 time.

I'll take it to the drag strip one day after it is all finished.

The best launch comes from Slipping the clutch. Dumping the clutch results in too much wheel spin. Due to the short gearing I have to shift twice before 60 mph. With the VIAS, better tires and shifting quicker I am sure I will have better times. Can't wait.

Thaniel.

Well thought I'd check in as I haven't posted in a while. The car is still running great. No problems with the intake. Glue is still holding strong. I've now put over 3000 miles on it. I still haven't gotten all the little details worked out but I have been super busy and then winter came.

That's awesome bro. Care to post up some recent pics? I'd really like to see that 5th gen dash in the car, and maybe some under carraige shots. Oh if you plan on having to take some pics out in the snow then do it in the morning or late afternoon as the reflection from all the snow will tend to wash out the details of the car. Great job man...glad to hear its still going strong for ya.

How much would you say the engine weighed again?

Not much has changed with the car since I started driving it so the pics of it from the fall are what it look like now. All my free time has been used up lately so I haven't had time to work on it. Long as it drives it doens't get attention right now.

I think my post on torque central has a pic of the dash and the weight of the engine. I forget what it was. I'm not sure about Pics of the under side. Hard to get good pics of that. I took 2 at the muffler shop but they didn't turn out all that great.

Exactly right. The LS1 swap would have taken probably half the time but it's not a nissan and it's been done before.
