blue smoke on startup what gives.....
Ok here is the deal for the past several months my car has had hard starts, it takes a good 3-4 trys to get her to crank. Sometimes she will fire on the first try other times she wont. The only code I am throwing is a p1706 which is the neutral safety switch code. I'm 5spd FYI.
But here is the deal, as of late and this is very odd....but for like ten seconds after startup I have a blueish, blackish smoke coming from the tail pipe.....its more blue then black though.
I cant tell if its excessive fuel burning off, or if it really is burning oil. Its hard to tell.
Only other thing is I have a exhuast leak right where the y-pipe and manifold meet.
Any ideas? Surely my car isnt already burning oil, I mean my goodness its a 99 and I do the oil change every 3-4k miles max.
Only other thing I could think of was about 6 months back I mis shifted from 3rd to 2nd while passing a tractor trailor and spun her up to 7k plus not sure the exact rpm reading though. I wonder if I floated a valve or something, and the signs are just showing through...but I hear no abnormal engine noises just see smoke....but it goes away after it warms up for the first ten seconds.

Blue is bad... but going to 2nd instead of 4th is very bad.... your front wheels would have chirped as the engine rev'd up to it's limit (and maybe over) trying to keep up with the vehicle speed.
Check (all) your plugs and oil level.

Yes, blue is usually oil. But that doesn't mean you know what the exact problem is.
It depends if it blows blue smoke all the time or just on startup. If only on the start up, that will point to some oil accumulating inside the cylinders while the engine is off. That is usually not the rings. It points towards the valve stem seals in the heads. Although I've not seen/read about this here. But it could also be not that many look for it either.
It could also mean you are pressurizing the valve train area via a plugged PCV. But that is also rare
I'd take it to a qualified mechanic and have both a compression test and a leakdown test performed.

Someone I know with a Integra did the same thing recently but he had a aftermarket ecu w/o a rev limiter and spun he car to about 10k rpms for a couple of seconds! For him he ended up bending some valves. When his car idled it resembled the idle of a WRX with that boxer engine sound. It did run fine though. Hopefully you didn't do similar damage. The blue smoke is for sure oil and the black is excessive fuel(rich). The black smoke may be from trying to start 3-4 times. Maybe it's flooding or something. I think you will need to do or have someone do a compression test. That will tell you where the problem is located. My guess would be in the valve train but it's just a guess. I don't know if you've ever heard of "The Car Doctor" before but this guy is a mechanic during the week and on sundays he does a am radio program where he has people call in with problems and he can steer you in the right direction. Good luck and hopefully it's nothing too serious.
P.S. I'm am so glad the forum is back!

I have the same issue, pretty much, running a 98 i30 122k change oil every 2500 miles regular bottles not synthetic. Just changed spark plugs to Ngk laser platinums and factory fuel filter. No codes, only known problems at the moment are power steering belt and low fuel economy(150 miles to the tank on premium) have an auto and don't really redline or anything. Have a lot of trouble in the cold with start up. I have a viper system with remote start because my key ignition is messed up. So I usually start with the key and go from there. However in the winter and sometimes in the summer I have to be in the car to press the throttle while starting up or it will just turn off. One time when I was In the car I attempted a start I heard the starter spin but no crank. Blue smoke coming out the exhaust. I have a aftermarket exhaust no leaks with a hi flow cat. After start up the smoke is no longer blue but it's getting harder and harder to start it. If someone has any advice that would be great. Thanks
Only other thing I can think of is I might have an electrical problem. My bulbs die out really fast anywhere on the car sometimes headlights flicker when music is on and my turn signals are always fast even when I don't have any bulbs out

If it only smokes right after startup, it's definitely oil getting into the cylinders while parked. Valve stem seals, most likely.
Whenever having issues with oil going somewhere it shouldn't, replace the PCV valve. It probably won't fix the issue, but it's cheap and rules out the most easy-to-fix potential problem.
