Tranny Problem

First off I apologize for posting this in two places. I just figured I would get a better response in the general forum.

I've had my car less then a month. 2000 Se 5 speed w/80k. When I purchased it I was given a very limited warranty so I need to diagnose the problem A.S.A.P. so I can get them to take care of it.

When accelerating I hear a loud whine from the transmission. The harder I accelerate the louder it gets. There's no noise on deceleration, or when the car is in neutral. My mechanic told me he thinks I need a new transmission. I just had the tranny serviced today. I was hoping that would remedy the problem. Please help!

You sure it's from the tranny and not wheel bearings or something? Does the tranny feel and behave fine except for the noise? Seems odd to me that your mechanic would recommend "a new transmission." just based on noise.

The tranny feels fine except for the noises. It does seem to be leaking fluid however. The car only makes the noise under acceleration, which leads me to believe that it has to be the tranny. That and the mechanic is a good friend. He told me he would be unable to do the work anyhow.
