So let me get this straight we for sure know that the new max is going to come with a 3.5l engine around 250-260hp. We also know that we will have a 6spd option. So now I'm being told by a frien of mine that nissan may also be considering since it will have higher hp, and tq. Making the new max rear wheel drive. I would get one then for sure. Has anyone else heard this.

The engine changes will come in 2003, not 2002 according to what I've heard. 2002 will only get a "facelift" for the most part.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't actually *know* anything... I haven't seen Nissan publicly state that we are getting a 3.5, a 6 spd, a v8, RWD, yada yada yada. I think, unless I missed a huge press release everyone else saw, it's safe to say they are all rumors at this point...

part since it will be produced (and is currently being tooled) here in good ol' Smyrna, TN near where I work....They may still move that part down to Mississippi, though, after tooling....No one will confirm if the Max will actually be produced here.....I hear stuff, but nothing definite.

It is supposed to go in a truck or sport ute, the Max, and (eventually) the Z. Although the Z is starting off with the 260-300 HP 3.5 VQ, so that may be hogwash....

2003 Max will have rear drive and a V8.......it ain't just a rumor.

The bigger engine will probably come with the bigger car.

So will the Max essentially become the poorman's Q45 instead of I30?

it will actually be a 'flagship' for a change instead of a pretender.....although I'm not sure a Max can/should compete with BMWs/Audis/etc.....

The new Altima will 'replace' the Max next year and will mimic the Camry/Accord, offering 4-bangers and VQs as an option....

Re: Yeah...

It'll be a "flagship", but it's not going to go "cushy" on us. It'll still have its soul as a "sports sedan". I was told by sources at Nissan corporate that we weren't about to have another Avalon on our hands with the new model.

So no more Japanese-made Maximas? I've been reading about all the problems people are having with their Altimas, very disturbing.
