On my quest for the perfect muffler/exhaust set up...

I am looking for a muffler that looks stock. So it would have to big a single tip like the 4th gens. I dont want it to be loud, but still want some flow, I do understand resonators can help this. I just want to be stealth and not draw attention with the loud sound or look. But, I do want this set up to be able to flow, so if I ever had forced induction or more power, it would hold up with no problems. What do you think?

Don I would suggest a RS*R EXMAG muffler, coupeled with a couple perforated core resonators, and you will have a quiet set up that flows.

"ExMag features - quietest exhaust note on the market (most applications) - refined stealth like appearance - ceramic coated mandrel bent piping - dyno proven gains in horsepower and torque - engineered in Japan - signature RS-R exhaust tip - constructed with 409 stainless steel for long life With the street performance enthusiast in mind, RS-R developed the ExMag exhaust line to provide powerful gains in horsepower and torque while retaining a quieter exhaust note. It is a well known fact that it is extremely difficult to produce an exhaust system that makes good power without the excessive noise. However, through extensive R&D at RS-R Headquarters in Japan, all ExMag systems have been dyno proven to provide significant power increases over similar exhaust systems. Our "Exhaust Magic" lineup offers an excellent alternative to the noisy "coffee can" style of exhausts. If you're tired of getting tickets and citations for excessive noise, this is the exhaust system you need. The classic styling and stealth like design will also help keep your car off the radar. "

Agreed, this is what I am looking for as well. I had some notion of using a 350Z muffler, but I'm not sure how well it would respond to having one side of the exhaust blocked. The muffler posted above would do nicely if it fit the max and was a reasonable price.

If you want a quiet muffler go with a dynomax super turbo, or warpspeed has a prototype "clone" of the super turbo that is a straight through muffler. Thats what Im eventually going to go for, with the 2.5" b-pipe. One guy said he called dallas at ws and let him listen to it installed... Maybe you can try that. Plus its only $250 for the cat-back. Hope that helps you out.

Summit Racing Turbo Mufflers. They start at $15 and they have a nice quiet tone to them but flow nicely.

That would be a muffler I would be interested in. Know of any places with a decent price?

Mike, I'm not sure if you'd be willing to spend $200+ for only a muffler.

I believe the best price I found online was from www.hopupracing.com it's not listed on their site anymore, so you will need to call and ask for it. This is the only muffler that I found that is quiet and had a 3" inlet..

Just slap a 5th gen muffler on there. It looks good, sounds great. What more could one want?

Don,

My Magnaflow #14827 is exactly what you describe, but in a more "aftermarket" fashion. The day I installed it, I honestly didnt know what it would sound like, I figured it wouldnt be TOO loud since:

1) It's 2.25" inlet
2) No other exhaust mods

It's stainless and polished (mirror finish) and sounds very good. You can only hear it from 2k - 3k RPM when the engine is warmed up. 4" tip does NOT stand out or look ugly.

2.25" Inlet, 4" Diam. Tip
Single Wall, Angle Cut
7" Tip Length
14" Muffler Body Length

Pics on car:

^^ have yet to hear ANY magnaflow that sounds good. My friend had almost that same exact one and combined with a Y-pipe, it sounded like poop...

he quickly took it off and switched to my old dynomax setup, then switched back to the stocker muffler...

VQs are much quieter engines than VEs. My magnaflow sounds great on my VE, but it is very loud. I've heard and seen VQs with magnaflows and the tone and volume level is different.

All this talk and not one sound clip or video? Please, somebody has to have a video or clip around here...I am very interested in a custom exhaust setup too, and honestly don't have a clue what a Maxima sounds like with an aftermarket exhaust.

I don't think it looks odd. I had a custom 2.5" catback made. It is kind of raspy sounding at 2000 rpms and then gets dead silent up through 6500. I can honestly hear the air swooshing. Quieter than the stock set up even before addition of the Budget y-pipe. I think I need to add a resonator to take care of the raspiness. Any thoughts/suggestions? There was no raspiness from just the y and stock catback.
