Totaled my SRT-4 and bought an 02 Max...

Just thought I would drop the usual newbe “ hello, I’m new to your forum” post.

I just picked up an Auto. 2002 Max SE about a week ago with 42k after I totoled my 04 SRT-4. The dealer was asking 17,900.00 and I picked it up for about 14,800.00. I thought it was a good deal since it’s a ceritified Nissan with warranty etc. The only thing I didn’t really like it the fact that it has no sunroof. I have HID’s and Leather, but no sunroof… Did I do ok on this deal?

Anyhow hello to all....

Thanks for the warm welcome….

Yep, there two totally different cars…

The Max kinda reminds me of my old GS300; it’s big, classy and the power delivery is smooth, refined & powerful.

The SRT-4 was a rude, unrefined but extremely powerful and capable sports sedan. It was a little attention *****… Here are some pic’s of the little bugger… I have to get some pics of the Max up soon as well….

I agree that Nissan quality is much better then the Dodge.

I was very plesently suprised by the SRT-4 engine & drive train and how durrable they are proving to be...

The spoiler & emblems were the first things to go...

It was a great little car before the Mini van ran me off the highway a 80mph....

There are several SRT-4 forum members with as high as 200 passes at the track, many on slicks and have not broken a thing besides the motor mounts… There are many SRT-4 running 450+ hp on the stock bottom end and CV axels. It doesn’t take a tone of miles on a car like the SRT that gets beat badly on a daily basis to figure out the fully forged internals will go a long way…

Any car like a 350Z, RX-8 Lancer EVO, WRX STI & SRT that are considered sport compacts will most likely be beat down right off the showroom floors and fall under a bit of a different category that a luxury sport sedan in terms of gauging reliability. Look at the demographics of people who buy this type of car vs. a Luxury sport sedan and you’ll see that hitting 200k is not the only way to gauge the reliability. Here is a good example... 167pases 12.60 on the stock turbo with 42k on the OD and no major problems

http://129.21.129.77/srtgurl/my_SRT-4.htm

My SRT was a great little sleeper had a few mods too...18" Wheels, Mopar Short throw shifter, Booger bushings, Progress springs, Mopar BOV, DC Sports Front & Rear Strut tower braces, $20 catch can,180 degree thermostat, Denso Iridium ITV20 plugs, Denso Performance 8mm wire set, AGP WGA, Mopar stage 1, Hallman Pro RX boost controller, BDJ'S 3" twister center dump exhaust.

Oh and thanks for the welcome...

nah the 4G63 is a 2.0L and the SRT-4 has a 2.4L. I "think" the SRT-4 engine is a Chrysler "in house" engine, possibly derived from some of their old-school turbo engines which held a ton of power too. Not sure on any of that, though.

You are correct, but I always found it very similar to the 2.4L engine found in the gallant and Eclipse…. But never perused it any further to find out if there related… I know a lot of parts on my old SRT-4 had the Benz emblem on it so I’m sure there were some Mitsu stamps around too, besides the one on the turbo…

Whatever, it was a cool car while it lasted… right now I’m enjoying the smooth power of my Maxima……

I’m looking forward to fiddling with the Max soon.

I still think the SRT-4 is better, just watch out for the AUTO tranny on your new car, many people have problems with them. Welcome to the org!

I think you're going to have to install a turbo kit because once you have boost, you can't go back

I’ve had a lot of boost in my life and always find myself back in a luxury ride with leather, at least for a little while…. I should have just slapped a turbo kit on my old SC300 5speed and been done with it….

Yea I know about Nissan transmissions, let’s just say that they benefit greatly from a flush every 20-30k. For now it shifts as smooth as butter…but I’ll be keeping an eye on it…

Thanks again, this looks like a great forum and I’m sure I’ll enjoy and benefit greatly from being here..

You guys like pics... here's some pics of my old 92 SC...

First, thank goodness you didn't get totalled with your car. That's the most important thing. On the other hand, thank goodness there's one less Demon Dodge out there to spoil my enjoyment of my new G35.

he means quite a few.

I like the srt's, sorry for the loss... yours was nice.

my story's similar to yours, I totalled the car that I thought was the love of my life (silver '86 benz 560sec with 5% tints... pure class), and had to rush into buying a maxima because I needed a car asap.

I settled for an auto, and it took me about 6 months, but I totally fell in love with my maxima. it's my baby. hopefully you'll enjoy yours too, good luck.

Welcome to the .org. I just refinanced my 2002 Auto SE without leather with 52k miles and it booked out at 15.9k, so you got a smoking deal IMO.

Really, cause last I checked the 2k2 auto maximas were pretty even since the nissan 6spd has the drivetrain loss almost equal to that of an auto?

I can see that this is a very unified board and look forward to being a part of it.

Ahhh, the million dollar question, why auto and not stick??? Well for starters, my wife can’t drive the car unless it’s auto; I didn’t buy the Maxima for speed, believe it or not .. I bought the Max cause for one I thought I was getting a good deal at $14,800.00 for a clean luxury/sport sedan and because after flipping a smaller car at about 80mph, I wanted to security of a larger and safer vehicle. I also felt very comfortable having meet the 50 something year old original owner of the car that I was buying as he had traded it in for a new Maxima a few days before I picked it up. If I wanted to go back to a fast car, I definitely would have bought another SRT-4 – after all I got that car to run 13.819 @ 102 in stock form on street tires. It’s quite easy to run 12’s in that car with about 2k in upgrades..

I’ve owned quite a few Mazda, Toyota and Honda products in the past and very few Nissan’s and wanted to go for something different & have always like the Maxima.
So far I’m quite impressed with the Lexus like silky smooth power delivery of the 3.5L power plant and drive train. I can defiantly see some 19” shoes and suspension in this cars future.. I know that some have complained about transmission issues, but I don’t know of one manufacture that hasn’t had tranny problems at one time or another. I think if you service it every 20-30k and maybe add a large oil cooler to the trans.. it will improve it’s life span….

Anyhow thanks again for the warm welcome guys!
