automatic starters...

well, i figure i might as well get a head start on winter and am interested in getting an automatic starter. i have an automatic 95 and am ok with some wiring. would you guys advise i just get one professionally installed or ? i know best buy and some local places have them, but i'd rather post here first and get some opinions.

obviously money is a big factor. i'm a full time student and i commute everyday so i'm looking forward to having my car warm and ready this winter; especially after adding leather seats!

who has one, what'd you pay, where/what would you recomend?

i was thinking of maybe going to the place near my school that installed my alarm because they had decent prices but again, wanted to check here first.

Im probably thinking of something else tho?

EDIT: I think you meant remote start?

My mom has a Avital in her Voyager, works fine, bought from Tweeter, less than $200 installed. My dads Max has a Astro Start, came with the car, had to buy new remotes, works sweet. I used to install remote starters and its not too tough. You need a variety of tools and suplies, so it may not be the job for you. I dont recommend anything from places like Wal-Mart/VIP/NAPA. Get a nice one with built in relays, 2 remotes, you probly dont need lock and unlock, trunk, or security features; so any basic (name brand) unit will do. Best Buy/Tweeter/Circut City can do them, but i would find an independent place that you have seen there work. Id say anywheres from $175 to $250 would get you into something you like.

Look up the 555u/556u from DEI. I use the 555u and have had no problems at all. Personally I think $100-$120 is pleanty to pay for the unit and install.

The 555u/556u is a universal transponder used to bypass the factory security system on most cars that use a transponder-based (chip built in the key) security system.

If you're planning on doing it yourself Jepht20, then do the research first. Get a wiring diagram for your car (which you can find HERE! ) If you've done ANY type of automotive wiring, then this shouldn't be too hard. (but I install for a living, so I might have a biased view about that...)

If you're not confident about it, then by all means get a pro to do the job for ya - it'll save you a LOT of head/heart ache in the end.

Good luck, bro!
