Symptons your Transmission is about to go?

What kind of symptons does a 5-speed trans have when it's about to go??

Grinding? jerkiness? engages gear hard?

thanks

My trans is smooth as buttah' but I have a whine in 1st and people told me it's the 1st gear bearing or something. You have a 98 so you shouldn't have that problem. If you have the symptoms YOU listed maybe some new fluid would get rid of them.

honestly, my tranny went out with no warning, everything was perfect, until it stopped catching the gears. so i dont think there are many symptoms, except for the shifter popping out of gear. that usually means that your synchros are shot.

I think what you are describing sounds more like the clutch is going not the tranny. When the clutch is about to go you will get some extreem jerking and loud noises when starting off in 1st and/or 2nd gear as the plates are slipping and then grab. Another sign is that when you are excelerating up the torque curve you will see the tach climb but not the speedo ( the engine is revving but the clutch is slipping).

Just my $0.02

When I go from 1st to 2nd I just touch the stick and the stick just pops out while I shift it to second but first doesn't have syncros right? So should I still be worried?

I know that on my 89 accord I one day heard a scraping sound while I was driving it or while it was idling. Just a metalic scraping sound. The mechanic said that 5th gear had died. The reason was that my tranny had leaked out all of the fluid and killed itself. I had been smelling "gas" for months, but never knew about checking the tranny fluid back then. I paid $1200 for that lesson.

If your car is whinning or slipping out of gear it is the synchro or more directly the slider on the synchro. Usually a manual tranny has a synchro for first/second, third/fourth, and one for fifth/reverse. If you hear it grinding a little going into a gear it may also be the blocker ring between the synchro and the dog teeth on the gear itself. Rebuilding a manual tranny really isn't that hard, but you need to press synchros on and off. By the way anyone got some messed up 5 speeds they want to sell cheap let me know!

well ****.
I have an ACT clutch, less than 30k on it. They usually don't slip for a LONG time especially since I'm not boosted. However if I do rebuild the tranny, the ACT and Fidanza are going out.

how many miles were on your cars when the tranny went?

thank you to everyone for taking the time to reply as well!!

you know what, it is a hard thing to detect. after i got my tranny redone, my first gear still pops out sometimes. specially when im going on 1st gear, then i press on the clutch, just to slow down at a speed bump, and when i let go of the clutch and accel. i notice that it is not in 1st anymore.
so i cant be too 100% sure, if it is the syncros, but that is what someone told me. i have to take it back to the place where i got it rebuilt, and see whats up. ill let you know the outcome.

I think I just noticed my clutch slip today. Does this mean my clutch is going out soon?? If so how much longer do I have?
