Anybody who likes to drive their Maxima hard probably has the same problem that I have. I never have the same problem on the streets but when I am auto xing and I have a 1/4 tank of gas left the gas just likes to move to one side and my car back fires when I step on it to get out of a corner. I guess I could go find a used gas tank from the junk yard and have baffels welded in but that would require some work. Does anybody have any other ideas? Or has anybody done anything to help this problem? Thanks any info would be helpful.

Oh you have no idea how badly this pisses me off. I get stalls with 3 gallons left, if the incline is high enough. Glad i don't live in san francisco..

I don't know how you can fix this.. there is limited ground clearance for the tank as it is.. perhaps multiple feeder lines, but then you would need to get the air out before feeding it to the engine. Terrible design IMO.

 

1. surge tank.
2. aux fuel pump.
3. get better baffling in the tank.

I have the same problem with my car at the track. I get about 85 miles to a tank before I have to fill up at 3/8 tank. If not, then the fuel pressure drops on hard left hand corners and I can't power out of turns.

 

I"m guessing this is a 3rd Gen problem? I would say baffling in the tank would help out alot. Kinda like what they do to oil pans.

 

hehe, yeah It happens to me out of left turns as well, BTW how did you get those ground control coilovers to fit on your koni reds? So have you done any of these modifications to help out the problem? or are you planning on doing it? Thanks for the reply's guys

Happens in my 4th gen as well though I haven't ever noticed it in corners, it happes to me on the straights (and has even happened on the street on occasion) when WOT in a straight line.

 

Yea I've noticed it while taking turns... the needle will slowly go down.. or up

but I've never stalled out...

 

I don't actually stall but under acceleration (2nd and 3rd gear is all I have tested it in, though if you get low enough 4th and 5th would do it too) the car will start hesitating and bucking as it is starved for fuel. Feels just like if you hit the rev limiter except you aren't it's just running out of gas because the pickup is not submerged.

I haven't bothered fixing the baffling issue with the tank yet. I just take an extra 7gal gas can with me to the track and fill up before my last run of the day. usually I can get in all but the last session on the first tank, then 5-6 gallons on the second one will finish it off.

 

If you do a lot of racing it might be beneficial to put in a 1 gal fuel cell with a separate inline fuel pump, filter and fpr like I do for my nitrous setup. Pretty cheap and easy really and will allow you to run with an empty tank in the rear and save a bunch of weight as well.

Just have to tap into the fuel line going to the injectors and put a shutoff valve on the original supply and return line and remove the fuse for the stock pump.

Actually I am going to try and modify my nitrous setup this week to run the engine N/A off this setup so I can try running the engine on race fuel vs just the nitrous setup. I plan on going to the track with the stock tank low and pump it out into a container so its really empty.

If you lose suction on a 1 gal fuel cell you are really empty.

 

sure... but when you're at a roadcourse, a 1 gallon cell will get about 3-4 laps. I've thought about just using a surge tank in the spare tire well and an auxilliary fuel pump to clean it up, but honestly I think some better baffling would solve the issues. I should have taken pics of it yesterday while I had a customer's fuel pump out.. there's very little actual baffling in the tank. basically a couple metal C-shaped things in there that overlap about 1", with a 3/8" opening for fuel to flow into.. maybe just welding on some flaps/doors to prevent the fuel from running out would help. but I'd rather not weld on my gas tank. maybe just use a mechanical punch and some pop rivets. too much of a PITA to empty, remove, and clean the tank to do a couple spot welds.

 

uh huh..... So how much modding do you have to do to make them fit?

 

I'm not telling.. (hint.. a LOT)
