Gas Mileage

Well something interesting happened to me the other day. I was just driving along when I decided to check my mpg on the display. So I reset the display and clock 34.5 mpg at 69...I was very excited...
The weird part was thrity seconds later it said 38.6 mpg at 71
then a few seconds after that 29.1 mpg at 70

Just wondering if anyone else had that happen..just thought it was really weird for the numbers to be jumping so much since I was on a clear highway and didn't really change speed. btw..my gas tank was full

It's not accurate. Try checking your gas mileage the old fashioned way and see what it comes out to. I agree with tedo007, it will probably be around 23-28 mpg.

Nothing is wrong with his calculations since he isn't making any. He's just reading an inacurate read-out.

I think it is totally normal to have these short periods of variable mileage. Some imperceptable variance in foot pressure or incline would cause this. Take your foot off the gas and coast it probably says 50 - 60 mpg. It probably would even vary some on flat ground with the cruise on.

doesnt really matter that much if i am driving the usual 50-60 all the time or more its always under 24 mpg. sometimes even like 22 mpg when i am drivin hard continuous.
I dont know why

Wow, I thought this was a joke. bhunter is totally right. When your on that highway doing that test hold your foot so its slightly touching the accelerater. What do you feel? Exactly. You feel the cruise control system constantly adjusting for variables such as incline and air resistance. Coasting down an on ramp in nuetral gets me well over 100MPG for the time I'm coasting. Coasting in gear usually results in 40-80MPG. Like duh...
