Thought I'd share my shop experience from HELL with
you so that people won't get d!cKed over like I was...
Two weeks ago I had my H&R/Tokico, Porterfield brakepads, fstb/rsb installed at shop in Passaic, NJ. The day after i realized my front passenger spring popped every time I made slow turns and my brakes were squealing. I brought the car back to the mechanic and he took a look at my susp. and said my front strut bearing mount was shot and need a replacement if I don't want to deal with the noise. He quoted me for $60 (part/labor) for the strut bearing mount replacement. A few days later he called me and suggested that I find a local shop to fix my front passenger susp. problem because a)it would be closer to me and b)he's not making money from this. WTF!
As far as the brakes are concerned, first he told me the pads will take a week or two to be broken in. It's just been about two weeks, brakes are still squealing. Last Friday I returned to the shop again and asked him if he can simply step out and take a look at my brakes. He couldn't because he was working on his car and the shop is technically closed. Without looking at my car he then made the assessment that all he needed to do is simply take off the wheel and pull back the metal hinge that maybe in contact with the rotor, causing the noise. There's no such thing on my Porterfields. He never mentioned that he forgot to reuse my old shims onto my brakepads.
Initially I had put in a good word on the board for his shop, in hope to increase his exposure and increase business. That had since been deleted from the org. To keep the story short, after paying $355 for the job, I'm left with squealing brakes and popping front passenger suspension. Disappointing and frustrating to see that the mechanic isn't responsible enough to correct problems associated with the job. I'm posting this with the intention of letting others know that sometimes even referrals made by others who seem to be trustworthy can lead to mishaps. You live and learn and let others know to stay away from shops like this.
