Future of the max
What do you think will happen for the max in the future?
The way I look at it, maximas were at their best during the 1989-2003 period, throughout the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations, starting when they introduced the VE SE in '92 (though 89-91 are fine as well, reliable and styling wise) up until it peaked when they threw in the 3.5 in 2002 but it really was too short a reign (And if you find your pre 2k4 car being on here, take it the right way, it looks good).

I'm not going to ***** and moan about FWD being in the new models like alot of people since front-wheel drive cars can hold high power output fairly well with the right setup, and still be drivable in the winter.

Nissan did a great move on the '95, even if you 3rd gen guys don't like it that much. They brought the curb weight down from 3170 to 2980 and give it more torque and some great styling. Now as I stated, I like 5th gens too (well, 5.5 gens) but I think they should have stayed with the A32 chassis and change the front and rear end a little just to say 'there, we've changed it!' work on bringing the weight down even a little more (more like 2900) and finally drop the 3.5 in there in 2002 and move on with something similar in the future.

I mean, look at the curb weight of the 6thgen, good god 3490 pounds, it's way too big (and I'm not even going into the Saturn Ion comparaisions, that's just embarassing). Now the Altima is just killing it. They made a fatal move with the 2k4; they can't go back now, since it will be a downgrade in space, and that the Altima would be larger.
There is a great comparaison pic that I found also:

Nissan Quest? Saturn Ion? Uglyas****?
As far as I see it, they will keep the giant boat and I'm not even sure they will bother with a 7th generation, what are your thoughts on this?

Between the 3-5th gens, performance-wise, stock for stock, the only generation that suck out was the 5th gen 3.5L models, and that was only in acceleration. What is your reasoning behind not liking the 3.0 5th gens?

I like them, but If I ever considered buying a 5th gen, I would go for a 3.5 no question. I went with a 1995 because it was the cheapest VQ. Like you said, the only noticiably faster ones are the 2002-2003 so that's what I would buy, even for a little more $ if I were shopping for a 5th gen.

I think that Nissan just decided to try and compete with the bigger, more luxurious cars and just used the maxima to do it instead of carrying on its sport sedan past. I'm not really sure that the altima is replacing it either, since it is getting pretty hefty itself. In my opinion, the g35 sedan is what the maxima should have become.
I was thinking that the next model of maxima you see will kinda take the shape of the current G35. You know kinda make the current body style a little longer in shape.
I hope that they dont push maximas up to high luxury class, which I dont think they will too much because of the ininiti line.

The Maxima is also in a class by itself. And not really in a good way because the Altima is now competing in the class the Maxima used to, and the G35 where we would have thought the Max would be.
I'm not saying the Altima is taking it's place, just the when comparing cars, it's sort of hard to find where the Maxima actually fits in.
Maxima doesn't offer a 4cyl, whereas the Altima does, and this in itself lends the Altima to more than one class.
