Clutch Discussion...

hey guys,
well my clutch is pretty much toast. I cant decide on a clutch. My dad has been looking at some brands such as: Daikin, Sach, and Luk. He says they are just as good as Peformance clutchs. Ive been leaning towards a Exedy or Spec both Stage 1. Im just looking for some experiences. Thanks guys

Sean

ACT, i have driven stage I and stage II and both feel good, grab well and dont have much if any chatter. I drove a turbo max with stage II and it felt better than my exedy stage 1, maybe even better than stock. I wish i could go back in time....

ACT clutches are nice....but have a tendency to warp lighten flywheels....it's nice having the stiff pedal pressure.

The stage 1 Daiken Clutch would be a good replacement for a non-boosted car.....I burnt through mine a matter of weeks trying to spray 85shot. If I had to do it over again, I'd go with a Spec.

Go with a SPEC stage 1 or 3, or AP Racing organic clutch.

damn you have one FINE car. I was hoping to get a small shot of nitrous this spring/summer. Would a SPEC Stage 1 hold up? I dont want to burn through it after i spend all this money on it.

Why is stock not in your poll? I can't decide between OEM vs. Exedy St 1.

The Spec stage 1 will not hold a 75 shot of nitrous. go with the Exedy stage 1 if you're n/a. Go with the Exedy stage 2-3 for boost/spray applications.

like I sated above, my spec stage 1 would not hold a 75 shot. so you need to decide for sure if you're going with nitrous in the future. if so i'd say go with a stage 2-3 clutch just to be safe. if you decide to stay n/a, then just pick up an OEM clutch and be done. you don't want to be driving all the time with some 6 puck clutch if you don't really need it.

Is the SPEC stage 2 any good? I heard the stage 2 is crap. What clutch are you using?

What would you go with TopElement? I dont have many mods. Im just looking for something 300$ or less that could be able to hold a small shot if i ever get it.

I really like my Exedy Stage 1. Unless your making some big power I dont see how the Exzedy would fail.
Also, you may want too consider everyday drive ability. With an extreme clutch like a stage 2 or 3 the clutch pedal will be very stiff and can work the h#ll out of your leg in traffric.

Yea... Thats what i was thinking. I do a lot of stop and go driving(city) 70% of my driving is city. I didnt want anything to stiff. I felt my buddys Exedy and it was nice, but ive heard some horror stories about them. Im just debating on Spec or Exedy.

What kind of mods do you have done? You have a stage 3 so it must be something special!

my exedy stage one held up well enough to allow me to spin a set of fresh drag radials a good way on my 13.50 pass on nitrous. then again those DRs really weren't heated up all that well. but me exedy is 3487634098 times better than the Spec Stage 1 clutch I had.

P.s Sean YGM. i sent those pics of that burnt up spec clutch that came out of my car about 2.5 months after it was installed.

yeah, Top Element you must have some serious power producing mods if you ate up a clutch that fast, and if you need a stage 3 clutch you must have some boost going or Spray, other than that, the stage 1 clutch shouldnt have been eaten up like that, unless its just that poorly made.

I would stay away from it. Myself and several others have had good luck with the Spec stage 2, including one guy with 400+whp. Why do you say it is crap?

Maybe it wasnt broken in properly, leading it to slip continously untill it gave up?

so we've had both sides say good and bad things about Exedy and ACT and SPEC if I read correctly... I am interested in buying a clutch soon, as I have 168k on my original OEM clutch. It's not slipping yet, but i can tell I'm gonna need one next year sometime. rice lies: future power mods are turbo and exhaust replacement. /rice lies
Any definitive answers on any of these clutches? So far it seems hit or miss =/

well i finally ordered a clutch. I was going to go with exedy but it was gonan be 2 weeks b4 it got in and probably awhile to get here. So i went with the SPEC. The only reason i went with spec is becuse my car is pretty much useless right now. I dont know if it will be driveable in 3 weeks. Ill let you all know how it works out. Thanks for all your help and support. I really appricate it!

i hope people making recommendations on the voting have actually owned the clutches they recommend or drove a car with it...cause a lot of people will base their next purchases on that poll and discussion here.

ok, here is my problem, I also need a clutch (and am searching for the best one around)
This thread has not given a good adivice on what clutch to buy.let me try to understand.
non-boost (normal bolt-ons maxima)
1) Exedy stage 1
2) Spec Stage 1
3) oem (if no racing is done)

my question is, waht about nismo, I just saw on ebay for $218 a stage 1 nismo clutch kit. is that any good, or even better the exedy or spec?
thanks
gui

nismo doesn't make that clutch. even if they did it wouldn't be $218. pretty much anything on ebay that says nismo is fake. go with an oem clutch from www.courtesyparts.com and be happy. who says you can't race with an oem clutch?

Wow, interesting. Older clutch discussions seemed to be about ACT vs. Exedy; this is the first time I've heard much about SPEC clutches, and we have people saying Exedy is crap get SPEC and people saying SPEC is crap get Exedy. I guess we should just wait until more people see this thread and vote/post.

I am NA and my Exedy Stage I has been holding up very well. It isn't stiff, and it grips well.
