I've been noticing that the max, even with all mods added cannot pass 400hp, and all of a sudden you see 4 bangers who started off with 100hp can go up to 600+hp, what is up with that.

The VQ could make that kind of power if the owner wants to take the same measures as the 4 banger guys. None of those 4 cylinders are running 600hp without serious bottom end and head work. If you want to do all that to the VQ, I'm sure serious power will be easy to come by.

Those 4 cylinder Hondas and DSM's running 600+ horsepower all have built bottom ends, modified blocks, headwork, etc. They've basically replaced every part of the engine. Plus most of them run well over 20 lbs of boost. You can do the same to a Maxima, but it's just more expensive. You need 2 more of everything since it's 6 vs. 4 cylinder. Also, parts are hard to come by and expensive.

It's all about the craziness....

Don't forget serious drags (idr etc.) are completely bare--major weight reduction.

I dunno. What is the point of a 400hp Maxima? That would be so much power, can a family sedan handle it? If I wanted 400hp, I would have gotten a sports car, not a family sedan. I give full props to people who can get 400hp from their Maxima, but it just seems like a waste to me. I bought my Maxima to be a reliable daily driver that is fun to drive, not to turn it into a firebreathing rocket car.

would the trannies (auto and 5-spd) and FWD even effectively support 400hp?

Good point. My guess is you'd never get the tranny to last more than a few (if that!!) road course races pushing that much bhp unless you replaced it with something else.... Seriously though, with tham much modification, are you really driving a max? It's more like the max frame and scratch custom guts.

I don't see the point in having a 400hp Max either. Even 300hp is pushing it in my eyes. The Maximas FWD setup is not great for serious performance and there comes a point to where you can only go so fast on street tires. I have enough problems with traction now, I can't imagine what it would be like with 190hp more. There are quite a few 12 second Hondas cruising the streets, but on the street they are only high 13 low 14 second cars due to lack of traction and funky powerbands.

Give me a LSD differential and 60 more hp and I'd be very happy with the setup.
