Just curious. Is this possible. Would removing the extra emmisions sensors on California spec vehicles cause known or unknown problems?

What makes you think there are "extra" sensors on the CA cars?

I saw this link in a previous post. It could certainly be wrong.

I clicked on the URL you provided and got the dreaded 404 File Not Found.

California spec cars

Thank your for the link. The following information is based on the '99 Maxima factory service manual.

The four numbered items are electrical connectors, not sensors. However some lead to sensors.

Item #1 is connector F48, Rear heated Oxygen Sensor LH (for California)
Item #2 is connector F28, Front heated Oxygen Sensor LH
Item #3 is connector F27, an intermediate connector (for California)
Item #4 is connector F49, Rear heated Oxygen Sensor RH (for California)

The FSM doesn't provide a lot of detail about the differences between CA and Fed specs. The connector designations, above, suggest that CA spec cars have two rear Oxygen Sensors, while the Fed spec cars have only one.

Perhaps our Maxima.Org members in California can clarify this.

so basically if i wanted to rid myself of a check engine light while changing my car from cali to fed spec all i would have to do is removie 1 3 and 4 and the corresponding O2 sensors would be inactive?(I wouldnt get a check engine light)

I couldn't say. The Factory Service Manual doesn't give enough information on the subject. I doubt it is as simple as disconnecting the sensors, but you could give it a try.

From the 5th gen perspective

The Cali spec emission maximas have three 02 sensors. The main difference between Cali and Fed spec is that Cali spec maximas have two pre-cats with one being built into the front exhaust manifold. Two sensors are placed past each of these two pre-cats and the last sensor is placed after the main cat. There has been some speculation and experimentation by Desert Pearl on the 5th gen forum to convert his exhaust to Fed spec. He has gotten hold of a fed spec exhaust manifold that does not have the pre-cat. He has moved the two front O2 sensors back to behind the main cat to see if he can fool the ECU into thinking that the pre cats are still there. The only time this may trigger a check engine light is when the car is cold since it takes some time for the main cat to heat up. Hopefully he will post an update to his work soon.

if these prongs are the connectors for the O2 sensors...why doesnt he just remove these and cut the O2 sensors from the exhaust completely?(if possible)

cutting the sensors off will almost definitely trigger a check engine light. If the ECU doesn't see them it will freak out and may put the engine in limp mode.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. For the record, CA-spec 5th Gen Maximas have FOUR (4) O2 sensors, one before and one after each of the two pre-cats. NONE of the O2 sensors are mounted aft of the main catalytic converter on CA-spec Maximas. I've got the exhaust diagram from the FSM to prove it.

Desert Pearl has moved the rear O2 sensor from each pre-cat to a position behind the main cat. For those who need help with math, that means he now has TWO (2) O2 sensors mounted behind the main cat. He'll mount the front O2 sensor from the left (front) pre-cat into the left (front) downpipe and the front O2 sensor from the right (rear) pre-cat into the right (rear) downpipe of a Stillen Y-pipe. Then we'll see if that generates a Check Engine Light.
