Ok guys... I got a problem here. Well not really a problem..

I always use the term "rice" to refer to like cheesy things on cars.. like when ppl put coffee cans on their tailpipes and epoxy on these huge-ast fins, cheesy stuff etc.

So LordRandall and another one of my friends says to me nearly the same thing today -- if it doesn't make the car faster, it's rice!

So a great stereo system is rice? Nice wheels is rice? Cool lighting mods are rice? Damn, I been using the wrong term then!

I guess i DO like a little rice.

Help me out.. how do you define RICE? Do you always think of it as negative?

I call it stuff that the vast majority looking at the car would see as in bad taste. The old yellow stickers, the uniwiper, exhaust pipes bigger than the muffler, stock tires on the drive wheels as if you were just at the track, and pink taillights. I guess that could also go for adding sounds to the car that have no effect on performance (that stupid raspy sound on 12 year old Civics with 90 HP engines comes to mind).

Rice would be the guy I saw today: he had nice big red "Type R" seat belt pads. But...he wasn't wearing his seat belt.

When it stops raining in my complex, I'll post a prime example. . . It looks like it just got painted as it used to be black, but now it is baby blue, with yellow headlight colors, bright fogs, not yellow, and the rear tail lights sorta changed. It looked ok as a black car, but the blue leaves a lot to be desired.

excelent... but to be more serious:

Rice is when somebody does something to a car to make it appear to be something that it is not, normally this involves making a car appear faster.

therfore, a stereo is not rice...
vtec stickers on a toyota = rice

So if you're frontin', you're ricin'?

So if I put that supercharger badge on my i30, I'd be frontin' AND ricin'?

the starchy seeds of an annual cereal grass (Oryza sativa) that are cooked and used for food

ahaha

Yes, RICE is derogatory. We've gotten into this business on whether or not it is racial or not. Technically no, but in context it can be. People take stabs at one another all the time. One guy yesterday at work made a comment that everyone should have to put in 14 hour days like him for disaster recovery. Someone else said man you've been out so many times you need to make up for the days you're not here. He's terminally ill but who cares right? So RICE is one of those words best used with your friends behind closed doors. It really isn't an acceptable word. Yes, I find those weird cars to be a joke, but who says we can judge why people do things? IMHO lots of mods detract from the value of the car. And instead of spending money on these really expensive mods, why not just buy a car from the factory? By the time you're done you coulda got an A6 2.7T but all you got is a Max with mods. So the Audi 2.7T driver if uncouth could call a modded Max "rice." And so it goes...

It's like you were reading my mind.

Rice is: you're trying too hard to make your car into something it's really not...

That clears it up for me

I too, was unsure about what "rice" was, but now, with everyones fine input, I think I have good understanding. So, would a person driving a "rice" car be considered a "ricer." Or is this borderline racial slur? Please, I truly do not mean to offend anone, thanks.

The term for someone driving a 'rice car' is called an 'idiot'.

Yeah, that could be one thing to call them... I would say that to a friend, but I would never do something like walk up to an asian guy at a gas station w/ a civic and say "what's up ricer?"... it's all in how you use it... I've even had my maxima refered to as rice because of my maxima.org stickers... I don't care..

just because you have taste in doing mods, look at it this way maybe the guy is doing things within his means, Why make him feel like shiet. But then again you have to tell some of these ppl because they really have no clue about tasteful mods.

Really Intangibly Crappy Exterior = Rice

Ice = In Car Electronics

Idiot = a Guy that says his civic in + stickers + Supra Wing + exhaust tip + 18in chrome rims is faster than your modified 3L V6/ or 3L I6

See though I don't buy this. Modding / playing with cars is a hobby that I enjoy more than most other things. When I was buying a car -- the modding was a serious consideration. I could have bought an a6 or s4 or gs400, etc. etc. But since I'd decided that my "toilet budget" (as in .. how much money am I willing to throw in the toilet, which is what buying a car and mods is... all it does is depreciate..) was $50-55k, and I wanted to mod it like hell because I ENJOY it, I decided on the i30t. It left me a good $20k to sink into mods, etc... see?

But I understand what you are saying about rice.

Rice is driving an import (mainly Honda) that is all look and no *****. (usually) They are garish, loud, overdone, and probably slower than a stock version because of the weight the mods add on.

Rice is meant to be cooked, eaten, digested, and then crapped out into the sewer system.

It's all about the Horsepower TO Sticker ratio.
The ratio should be no more than 100:1.
Thats 1 sticker per 100 HP.
Complete absence of vinyl is prefered though.

Rice is the "Type-R" badge I saw on a 4-door Integra yesterday.

A Stereo is not always rice, but I have seen some set-ups that are very ricy, rims can be rice.

It's a very touchy subject. Case by case basis...

Is that political enough for you Anthony?
