I was initially going to go to the car wash and use the engine cleaner, but a friend warned me that using water that's cooler than the temperature of the engine can be dangerous. I was also concerned about the electrical components, and spark plugs. Any suggentions, tips, warnings.....?

1.)Don't ever wash a hot engine.
2.)IF you feel comfortable, spray way on the engine. I do and have had not had any ill effects, BUT others here have had problems with getting CAIs and other things wet. If you are asking the question, then I think that you shouldn't be doing it.
3.)Our spark plugs are very well 'hidden', and shouldn't be the slightest bit affected by water.
In closing, watch someone else do it, if at all possible. Try it if you want, BUT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
