My times continue to work their way down. Tonight, with a warm track and cool ambient air, I achieved a new personal best in the 1/4: (I guess I need to update my sig now...)

r/t: .516
60': 2.123
330: 6.113
1/8: 9.436
1/4: 14.697
MPH: 93.12

On this particular run, I ran against a Rustang 5.0, waxing his a$$ by over 1/2 of a second. FYI, my time was "clutch-limited", as my clutch didn't want to clamp down with vigor on my 1-to-2 shift. That dang clutch did this to me TWICE tonight. I guess it's time to install a beefier clutch and a lightened flywheel. And I'm not on bottle-assist yet... Ooh baby!

Must be nice... My '91 would be lucky to run a 41.697...

Those are some awesome 60' times. What's your secret to get a launch like that? Were you using your drag radials?

Yes please tell us how you launch - w or w/o drag tires!

Wow, yummy 60'. Let me know how you did it. Did you run BFG DRs or street tires? What's your "track setup".

Everyone else:
What's your honest opinion of the UDP. Good, bad, decent?

Check my sig... When I race, I mount my stock 15x6.5 alloy rims on the front, shod with 205/50/15 BFG Drag Radials. I have driven around town with these on the car to wear some of the tread off. In fact, there isn't much tread left on them now. I *inflate the back* tires to 44-psi to minimize rolling resistance. I *deflate the front* tires to 20-psi to optimize grip at the start.

The 15" rims afford some side-benefits:
- They are lighter than my everyday O-Z rims.
- They give my car a nose-down attitude, lowering the front about 1" lower than the back. This helps reduce the normal weight transfer to the rear at launch.
- This wheel/tire combo has a smaller circumference than my everyday wheels/tires.

With my everyday 16" Monte Carlo wheels, a shift into 4th gear near the end of the track is not really practical. I just don't get more speed with that. I am forced to scream across the finish line in 3rd gear. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

When I switched to my 15" wheels and low-profile DRs, I found I could shift into 4th gear sooner before the finish, into a meatier part of the powerband. I believe my 3rd to 4th gear upshift helps me run faster now. In fact, I think the switch to 15" wheels and DRs helped me pick up 2/10s.

When I approach the starting box, I by-pass the water. I do a *brief* dry spin to rid the tires of debris. I stage thin at the staging lights to get a running start, and I rev my engine to about 2,000 rpms. I immediately focus on the lights, because our track starter has an itchy trigger finger! (Ya gotta get ready to GO!)

I launch *just* before the 3rd light. I very quickly ease out on the clutch as I very quickly add in throttle. It is as close to dropping the clutch as I can get without really dropping the clutch, if you know what I mean. I follow the launch with a hard PUNCH to WOT, running the rpm needle all the way to redline in 1st before I shift into 2nd. I do a QUICK lift-throttle shift at every gear. Whenever I power shift, the dang clutch slips a little, robbing me of time. I shift as fast and smooth as I can, and my shift from 3rd to 4th is a blur. BAM! I haven't missed a gear yet...

I learn new things everytime I go to the track. Practice, practice, practice. Set goals. Evaluate/Chart progress. When you can ****** this pebble from my hand, it will be time for you to go, Grasshopper! Good luck.

This is my technique:

-quick 1/2 second spin to clean the tires
-set the prestage light
-creep up just until the stage light is set (shallow stage)
-rev up to 3000
-on the 2nd amber I quickly slip the clutch and feed gas and hope I land at 3000.
-take 1st to 6500, 2nd to 6300, 3rd to 6000, hold on to 4th

This usually nets 14.7-14.8@93+mph. My 60 foots are always in the 2.25-2.30 range. I usually get a bit of spin and hop on the launch. I'd slip the clutch more, but I don't want to burn it out. I usually drop the fronts down to 26 psi and bring the rears up to 42psi. All runs on my 16" K1s with 215/55 Yokohama all-seasons. I plan on drag radials in the near future. I hope the slight torque multiplication of the shorter tire (stock 15" wheels) and the grip might push me into the 14.4-14.5 range on a cool night.

How do you like that UDP? Did you notice anything (butt-dyno, track results)?

Thanks,

Dave

doh! I forgot to raise my back tire pressure on my best run... is a 14.7 possible? I run at 22 on the front... here is what I did on my 2.213 launch (on lame toyo tires)

- stage neutral...
- on first yellow rev and hold at 3000
- pop clutch on third yellow
- release gas a little to get traction.
- gun it for all I can

- shift at 6200 into 2nd
- shift around 6000 for the rest of the gears...

got me a 14.8

The UR UDP is a jewel. (I got a black one for stealth.) I believe the exhaust mods I have rob me of a little low-end torque. I also believe the UDP gets it back. The engine seems to rev more quickly, too. A lightened flywheel will accentuate this feeling, I'm sure.

On my last visit to the track, I made 5 runs. I had no wheel spin, nor wheel hop, on any of those runs...
