Is MAFS Same as O2 Sensor

Hey all,

Heres my Question. Is what nissan calls the Mass Air Flow Sensor the same thing as the "O2 sensor"?

Let Me break my problem down for you all. I have future plans of turbocharging my 2001 Max.
So I am slowly buying parts that I will need (i.e. Greddy e-manage, & an A'PEXi Auto Timer for turbo).
I just got the A'PEXi Turbo Timer and I want to install it, but I am unclear on one part of the instructions.

It says Splice the white wire (O2 sensor signal) form the relay (the timer relay that is) into the O2 sensor wire from the ECU.

All help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks Devilish

no, the O2 sensor is in the exhaust side, reads the exhaust, while the MAF is on the intake side and reads how much air is going into the engine.

You're asking this and you want to turbocharge your car?

MAF and O2 sensor are not the same thing. Any car has two O2, one in the pre-cat and post-cat. The MAF is a sensor that measure amount of air in the intake box before reaching into the engine for combustion.

Uh-oh. Here comes Mr. E-thug!! Unfortunately for you money doesn't buy common sense.

I just don't think someone who thinks a freakin MAF and O2 sensor is the same thing should be dealing with boost. Thanks for making my day...

I can almost see the turbo timer letting the magic smoke out as it gets hooked up wrong. This should be entertaining!

Doesn't seem like you have the money for a turbo either. Sounds like every other kid who installs a turbo timer first and then says "turbo is coming soon" 5 years later, they're still rolling with just a turbo timer. Wow, with the emanage and turbo timer, sounds like you got the most important parts down.
You're about $500 into what will be a $6K project if you ever get that far.

And if you don't know the difference between a MAF and an O2 sensor, then expect to get flamed if you post and tell people you plan on turbocharging a car. If you do get a turbo, bit of advice. Pay someone to install it or your car will never run. Why are you tapping into the O2 sensor for the turbo timer anyways? It should just be the ignition wires.

I think the new FATTs determine cool down off O2 voltage and they also display it(I think...)...other than that I don't see the real point.

and I have to agree with everyone else...if you have to ask these type of questions, you can hang up an Emaage install...leave it to a professional, there is no shame in that if you value a PROPER install.

Ok, that makes sense then. I've only done a couple of Blitz timers and a Pivot. None required tapping an O2.

i like e-thugs. they make me laugh

on a thread related note, i've installed a few turbo timers for my rich friends who can afford turbos, and i've never seen reference to tapping into the O2 signal... maybe i'll buy a new turbo timer when my mom buys me a turbo

Mine is 1995 Maxima. We faced n recent problem, engine turns off whenever we start it in early morning. RPM is not very steady, & it regains it's activity after engine gets warmer.
Engine yellow light is on. Otherwise car goes very good.
The Mechanician told me it is the O2 sensor, I changed but i wonder shall i have to change frequently? Any one faced my same problem?

I got a question...woulda posted it in a new thread..but I'm new... (92 SE Auto) 170k miles

Driving down the highway...start to go up an incline on the highway and it dies. Starts back up. I thought I ran out of gas cause my guage doesnt work. Fill er up runs fine. 5 hours later I get off work drive her home sputtering a bit uphill but not bad...if i had just run out of gas that would be expected so I thought nothing of it.

The next day I start 'er up goes to 1k rpm then to 500 and dies. You step on the gas and it barely wants to do anything (bad sputtering etc) untill about 4500-6000 rpm then it seems fine. Burns tons of white smoke though and a noxious smell not like gas (even b4 I drilled holes in my cat,) heh. I changed the fuel filter cleaned the intake. Even drilled a few holes in my cat. converter. added some injector cleaner. Nothing worked.

So playing around, I unplugged the Mass airflow Sensor and it started idleing like a champ (was already hot from reving motor). Ran good as long as you stay below 2200 rpm which is ECU "safe mode" from what I read. Went to autozone they wanted 180$ after core charge...luckily I convinced them to let me try it b4 i bought it. Because after I installed it, plugged it in and the motor instantly died. Leads look fine as far as I can tell on the plug cant see any problems with any of the wires comming off it. Found out today, that it only runs fairly well with MAF unplugged if its at normal operating temperature cold it still sputters and dies but nothing like when its plugged in. Even when warm it sputters a bit going up hill. Fuel pump isnt even a year old so I'm doubting its that. Can't see any probs with any vacume lines. Any ideas?

I have the Apexi turbo timer, it has a feature to read A/F ratio, thats why your required to tap into the 02.

for the 2 other guys with questions. Try making your own thread instead of posting under someone else's. I think youll get better responses that way.

ok...installing a turbo timer BEFORE you BUY a turbo, not to mention installing it..why not just get a boost gauge as well? Better put a front mount on for the full effect.

Buy a Haynes Manual, and download the .pdf of the FSM. they will be your best friends. You'll learn all about your MAF, PCV, KS, PCM, ECTS, TCM, EGR, and whatever other acronyms you want.
