6th gen is fugly, 5th gen is not. thats all you need to know.

BUT SERIOUSLY, not major diffrences, the 6th gen has some extra "creature comforts" but i really do not like the car due to the front end body change. there is a HP increase, but it is minimal... Im sure that the diffrence is nominal.

I like both cars, but I do belive the 6th gen edges out the 5th gen on looks. I think the 6th gen has MUCH more road presence then the 5th. I think the 5th is built better as far as quality, and the 6th gen is faster despite what the 5th genners say Please 5th genners don't flame, I love all Maxima years.

Man I cant believe this thread was started, its gonna be straight bashing. I wanted a 5.5 gen originally but I didnt wanna buy it used and the prices around the time were only a 2k difference between an 03 or 04. I went with the 04 because I thought it looked sportier, although it is indeed a larger car. My girlfriend has a 02 automatic and I drive it quite often. Theres no comparison in performance because hers is an auto and I have a 6 speed but my car is quite a bit quicker than hers. I like my car much more and it handles better. I just wish we weighed the same as the 5.5 gen. I do love both cars and woudnt mind owning a 5.5gen 6 speed.

I have had quite a few strangers(non max owners) come up to me and tell me that the 5th gen is the last "real" maxima.

And I would agree with them. However, 6th gen have IRS, we (4th an 5th) do not. Ironic how it's the non-IRS equiped maximas that dominate the modding scene. Modded 3rd and 6th gens are there, just not as present/common as 4th and 5th gens. The 3rd gen has an edge on the rest of this though; other than the suspension, it's the most reliable.

Yes, there is an HP increase, but it comes at a price. Weight.

5th gen curb weight = 3230 pounds
6th gen curb weight = 3430 pounds

Yet, the final drive on 6th gen 6-speeds is 4.13 rather than 3.82 like 5ths, which may explain why that **** is still capable of mid-14 1/4 mile times even when hauling around its nigh-3500 pound curb weight.

Does anyone have a dyno for 6th gens? 5.5 gens dyno 205hp/220lbs-tq with the 6-speed. I know that 5.5th gens don't really have the 255hp/246lbs-tq figures nissan claims. It's more like 240hp/260lbs-tq at the crank. Torque monster.

I think 02-03 6-speeds own us all, no mater what year what trim.

From some of the dynoes I have seen the 6th gen does like 215-220 hp and around 220 tq I think.

Is that customaxima.coms dyno? Just curious because the Tq seemed extremely low.

I wouldn't say that....the 6th gen has grown on me. I seem to like it more and more (although I still prefer my 5th gen )

I have just owned a 3rd and 4th but I really like the look of the 6th gens. Something really needs to be done to the tooth though.

I forgot how much fun IRS is after getting rid of my 1990. :\

4th and 5th gens all share the VQ30 and there's tons of commonality and parts availability because of that. I think 4th gens edge out 3rd gens as far as reliability goes, unless you're talking about VG 3rd gens without the VE's VTC issues.

The 4.13 gearing just takes care of the larger diameter wheels. The "real" reason for the performance is the under-stated power and the Gen-III VQ35 head design (from the 350z) that the 5.5's lack (use Gen-II head design). This sucker is putting out way more than 265hp/255tq to be putting down these times, especially when you also consider the massive 18" rims and all of the inertial drag.

I haven't been paying attention to the 6g forum, but the only dynos I've seen haven't been independent and all seemed to have very inconsistent or otherwise screwy results. Regardless of what the "true" dyno numbers are, the track times speak for themselves and are mighty impressive considering the heavy weight.

My 5th gen was much quicker down low than my 6th gen. 2nd gear has nowhere near the torque the 5th gen had.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't heard of any 6th gen getting amazing times to suggest that the car is making way more than it's 265hp/255tq paper rating. I know that there's the one 6th gen owner that takes his Dads auto SE to the track and got a 14.2@96mph, but he's the only one to pull off such a feat. To me, that's just a quick track because no one else has come close to pulling off such a thing. The mildly modded 6 speeds are getting 14.5-14.8@95-97mph which sounds about right for a 3450lb car with a 6 speed and 215whp. Overall, the trapspeeds for these cars are in the 94-97mph range which is fractionally lower than what the 5.5 gens are getting. The extra 10/15whp/wtq the 6th gen makes is wiped out by the additional 200lbs in weight.

6th are nice, but really just an altima with a few body mods and interior changes. The 5th may be the last "real" maxima, but when it came out the 4th was the last real one. If there is a 7th then the 6th will be the last real maxima.
