If so what material did you use to seal it? Sheet metal of some sort right?

 

I've seen that in mags for weight savings and cleaning up the airflow under the car.

Pretty extreme, but I'd say cut it out and then box it in for a relocated battery or fuel cell.

 

Just use 16-18 ga plate steel. Cut a template of what you cut out and tig weld in. Easy.

 

wouldn't that change the wind resistance or drag (whatever the hell that coefficiant thing is called that they test)? or would that be fine if you made it flat? just curious...

you can do what Sadler did and just mash it so your dual exhaust setup fits

neatly cut away the entire spare tire well and have a sheet of metal welded into place.

I'd say if you're going to do this, might as well cut out the whole trunk floor and just use aluminum sheet, if weight reduction is the goal and you don't carry anything in it.

 

therealgoon9, he's actually in Atlanta also Bijan so you might be able to check out what he's done. I dont think he's completely finished yet though (at least last time I saw it). Da-max is right, he cut it out to fit the G35 mufflers.

 

Cut a square shape around the perimeter of the spare tire well.
Stitch weld 18ga 304 SS angle metal to inside of opening, as a frame. Best to make the frame on a workbench to ensure it's square and level. Seal edges of welded area.
Rivet lightweight panel of carbon fiber to metal frame.

That's it. Shaved weight, and made a good place to attach rear diffuser.

 

Okay Larry, I think that CF resin is seeping into your skin and affecting your brain.

 

If you find CF resin anywhere, lemme know! We only use VinylEster and Epoxy resins. A panel of carbon fiber was chosen over metal because it's lighter, stronger, and reduces noise transmission.

 

CF resin = resin used to make CF stuff...what's next CF valve stem caps, CF cig lighter, CF dipstick handle, nevermind.....

 

i have made a CF frisbee and ashtray if you'd like. At a small nominal fee of course .. haha. Ok, back on topic

Just a reminder of who he is, since most people remember other members with crazy stuff like motor swaps.

 

I removed every inch of metal in the trunk, from one side of the frame to the the other side all the way up as close as I can get to the back seat. I used aluminum sheet metal it's very thin not sure how much thiner but it was very unstable so I had to use adhesive foam to fill up the gaps and sturdy it up. This job requires alot of patience so take your time

No offense japmaxSE, but that looks pretty ghetto. Seems like it would be flimsy, did you add any sort of reinforcement on the other side? Isn't it going to be a PITA to remove the rear bumper with all those screws on it?

 

Evap stuff is still there.

 

As far as it being flimsy I still can put groceries in the trunk oh and when I was changing out my rear speakers I had to lay in the trunk and I weigh 158LBS so I don't think it's flimsy.

As far as looks who looks under the car

 

I would use heavy gauge steel and weld everything in place.

 

Hey wait a minute, not sure if this was brought up before, but that gives me a perfect idea of something crazy but not that crazy. I remember watching "Two guys Garage" and a buddy telling me how a turbo kit was mounted in a way that it was located in the rear of the car instead of in the engine bay where it can be very cramped because of the piping and every thing else I remember they have kits special made for F-body's. I know there is a name for this type of setup but I can't remember. Basically what im trying to say here is that if you were to cut out the spare tire well, and sheet metal it flat, you might be able to place a turbo right there. Of course its going to take a lot of fabrication, but it seems kinda of a nice setup where you don't have to do a lot of trial and error for a custom exhaust manifold for a turbo if it was placed in the engine bay of a Maxima. If I had all the time and money, i put this type of set up to the test and see if it works out. Probably will but how effective will it be. I'll be posting this in the turbo thread too, I'll basically copy and paste what I just said.

That is crazy the piping would have to be tramendous I've heard of alot of crazy ideas of mounting a turbo but in the trunk damn I don't know what else to say but I have got to see it or I won't beleive it.

 

Well I mean not in the trunk but underneath the sheet metal, I wonder if there is enough clearance under there for a turbo to fit, especially for lowered cars, but what im afraid of is when you have to go over bumps.

 

It's called "Remote muffler-mount turbos".

Turbo & High-Tech Performance did an article on a Squires Turbo Systems(www.ststurbo.com) kit install on an older 3.4L Toyota Tacoma. At 4psi, it went from 140bhp to 224bhp supposedly.

Interesting concept.....

Its probably going to be located somewhere where the well used to be if you were to cut it out, and sheet metal that area. Cuz that well is pretty deep.

 

It replaces your muffler, so there is usually some pretty nice space opened up.
