I've seen that before, but I never notices they divided the first gen's up. Now my 3rd gen is a 4th gen according to them.

I don't like how they use what seems to be very slow 0-60 and quater miles times for the "5th and 6th" generations. Where's the 0-60 in 6.6 sec that I love seeing?

I always thought they looked kind of generic. Didnt like the 5th gens either until my wife told me I like it, and made me buy the one I have. I loved my 2nd and 3rd gen.

Well i think the generation was based on the Datsun 810 however I disagree with Edmunds classifying the Maxima in each gen. Since the name "Maxima" didn't show up til the early 80's when they have the Datsun 810 Deluxe and then the Datsun 810 Maxima which evenutally drop the 810 to Maxima. To us, we are right, that whatever year your Maxima is the correct gen. I.E 00'-03 is a 5th gen. It's a good article, i'm kind of surprise how much they praised the 3rd Gen a lot in terms of HP, quality and style.

I thought it was a good and fair writeup. I wouldn't even think a website like edmunds would take the time of day to actually write something about a family sedan

It was a good read. Then they had to say the 4th gen was not a good looking vehicle. After that, I just thought they were stupid. no really, the article was good. I still don't understand the 4th gens are not good looking comment, but whatever.

Yeah, I still don't understand what the f*ck is up with everyone saying 4th gen styling sucks. Call me biased but it's my favorite looking maxima yet. I have a soft spot for 3rd and 5th gens as well.

The only thing that sucks about 4th gen styling is the 4 X 4 look, I never understood that. 2 inches lower and I'm happy. Also I always wished Nissan had only changed the bumper for 1997. The '97 steering wheel and bumper were a huge improvement over the '95-'96, but I always liked the 95-96 rear end better.

As for the front end, I wish Nissan would've kept the 95-96 grill and paired it with a 97 bumper. The combo of both looks best, the grill just needs to be extended a little bit so there is no gap between bumper and grill.

They also said (about the 2004 Maxima "The dash area in particular looks much more appealing than in previous Maximas."

I don't know about you guys but I'd take my 4th gen dash (or 5th gen) over a 6th gen dash any day.

Get a 1997 bumper, looks much better.

That's Neal's car. He had the '97 bumper but kept the '96 grill. As far as I know, he's the only one with this combo as of yet.

i dont think that they would be wrong about the labeling of the gens. they probally got most of this info from nissan them selves

It's semantics.

It soooo doesn't matter.

Excellent article though. I could go on and on about what's wrong with the 4th Gen styling...but I won't.

my brother got his first maxima in 84 when they still had the datsun badge and the first talking lady. i got to drive it yrs down the line when i was old enough and thought the suspension was kind of tight. my first car in h.s was the 1986 se five speed with adjustable suspension brand new. talk about heaven to this day i havent driven a car with a smoother suspension. i didnt like the 90's one off the back but after owning it i loved it. i have had all the models and they have gotten better and better as far as performance.

I didn't like the 95 when they first came out either. The style grew on me later. I think the 89-94 were the best generation when it comes to styling.

The 4th gen front and sides are nice.....but it does get fat out back, and they could have put more time into tails/rear bumper I think. I think most of there gripes came from the 95-96 model.

Interesting article. I love the 4th gen looks and the 5th gen looks the best. I love the hp and torque numbers in the 6th gens. I don't know much about the other gens.

yeah the maxima is the best al laround sedan that you can get for what it cost. better then the camry and accord i think. the 3rd gen looks good on the outside but insdie i really dont like it. the 4th gen i like the 95-96 better then the 97-99 especially when you add a stillen lip to the 95-96 bumper. it just makes me drool. i liek the 97-99 only casue of the red/clears you can get. only if red/clears were mass produced for 95-96. then the 5th gen. the AE model is the best but i still would take a 5.5 gen.
