Any way to secure my license plate?

I just heard somebody's been stealing license plates in my neighborhood. Is there any way to secure mine in place other than the couple screws that hold it in?

Bolt it in top and bottom. Then fill in the screw heads with solder. The chances of a thief carrying a battery-powered soldering iron are slim, and he'll probably just move on to the next car to avoid the difficulty.

In Philly people put those smoke colored plastic things over their plates. They serve two purposes--one, they make it a pain to try to steal the plate, and two, the plate cannot be read even when directly behind the vehicle. Why it's tolerated by law enforcement is beyond me. This is a city where they couldn't figure out how to glue a printed reggie sticker inside of glass, so they abandoned the program and put the sticker back on the plate. Seeing as New York has been doing the reggie inside the windshield since 1985, you'd think they coulda just called Albany and asked what kind of glue they use....

Would I ever need to remove it? I'm not sure. You see, I'm from Indiana, I attend Iowa State University, and I read an announcement that said "for the past 4 days, out-of-state plates have been stolen." Pretty sick joke if you ask me.

I would think that it wouldn't be legal as it's not illuminated. If it gets stolen, couldn't you just file a report and the DMV get you a new one?

Like Frank Fontaine said, here in the Philly area people use License plates covers, some are smoked, some are a translucent red/various colors....HOWEVER, there are just plain clear license plates covers, I have one on my Mom's Bonneville and I am buying one this weekend sometime for the Max, you use that and you should be fine, because it does slow them down a tad and time is a thief main enemy

get torx screws and screw them in. for more of a PITA use 2 different sized torx screws. thievies usually carry a screwdriver...they don't usually carry a torx driver/bit and to have 2 different sized one would even be more of a pain.

if you don't think that's enough security then get some alum rivets and rivet the plate to the metal part of the car. when you need to pull it out you'll need to drill them out.

yeah, what Danno said.
Torx screws. you can get them at any decent hardware store, as well as the bit to fit them. and make sure you can't just grab onto the sides of the screw head with vice grips.. I've seen that done as well.

I just bought my lease out and had to replace the old plates with new ones. One of the screws snapped off in the teflon anchor. Is there a way to replace the teflon inserts for the license plate screws?

The "universal" ones that are sold at Auto Zone DON'T fit properly. I'd just pick up the Nissan versions to avoid fitment issues.
