Passport 8500 X50 Questions

I know there have been many posts on this. I can't search, but wanted to get some real world feedback on this. I have read everywhere that this is one of, if not the best radar detectors. One of my main concerns (actually my wifes), is the false alerts. I have read both positive and negative regarding False Alerts. Can anyone tell me, which side I should believe? I had an old Bel, and I knew exactly when I was near a grocery store....just listen for the detector. That is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I don't need to know where every supermarket or drug store is. I want to know if I am in jeopardy of getting a ticket. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

you have the option to turn off the X band on the x50. but be careful because some states still use X to gun you down. i turned mine off because 1. it got freakin annoying passing every motion sensor, and 2. cops dont use that band here. you can turn down the sensitivity of the X band also but i find that useless. i dont think every radar is fool proof. of course youre going to get your false alerts but it doesnt happen too often. ive liked mine ever since i got it. im sure other people have their opinions.

So does the x50 really alert whenever you go by a store with automatic door openers, if you left x band on? I am trying to decide between the x50 and the V1. I have been hearing the biggest gripe about the V1 is the amount of x band false alerts....and that the x50 was better at that. My conclusion was that if you were a constant highway traveler then the V1 would be the way to go. Mine is a good mix, and each day going to work I drive by a fairly large retail area. That is why I was leaning towards the x 50, as it was supposed to be better at filtering out these types of false alerts. I'd hate to have to listen to screeching for 3 miles, every time I leave the house to go anywhere. Thanks for the info though!

I think it's all common sense, just like any radar detector. The Escort is up there on the list of "best detectors", and the subject of "Escort vs. V1" has been debated to the point of risking banning...

I have both a V1 and an Escort in my cars, and they're basically the same (IMO, no flames please ). I like the V1 arrows, but the lack of them hasn't cost me any tickets when using my Escort mostly because it's just common sense. You drive and you KNOW where you expect an X, or a K... if you hear the tone somewhere you haven't before, it's reason for concern. They'll tout POP, and upgrades, and whatever, but chances are that you know exactly what the cops in YOUR area are using, and where they like to sit... it's just more intel coming your way about possible radar in the area, and then it's up to you to act on them. If the cops around you are 100% LIDAR, then save your money and drive the speed limit... or spend another $500 on a laser shifter and hope The Man is lenient about you messign with their guns...

There are false alarms everywhere, and you're gonna get some even with the best detectors... it's the trade-off of letting you know everything or ignoring what could be a genuine radar source. It's up to you to decide whether or not you wanna roll the dice...

The Escort and (the newer?) V1 come with auto-mute IIRC. They'll beep for a few seconds, then go into really low volume unless a new source is found. I drive by 20 highway cameras on X every day on the way to work, and after a while you learn to tune them out... but if a K shows up in between, it makes you pay attention immediately...

Don't fret over X50 vs. V1... they're both basically the same and the only difference is price -- mostly justifying the features of the V1 that are "missing" from the X50 -- namely the directional arrows, rear coverage and built-in POP (if you get it flashed). Other than that, you're gonna very close sensitivity to X band stuff unless you switch to "highway mode" or disable X. All up to you whether you wanna go that route or not.

X50 or V1, chances are you'll get a ton of alerts around that shopping area anyway. I know I do.

Yeah...good point. I do NOT want to start a x50 vs V1 war here...I was just curious about the X50's ability to filter out the unnecessary, as I've heard some say the produce almost no falses. I have an old "el cheapo", and I finally stopped using it cuz I got tired of it going off everytime I left the house. Thanks

just switch it to city mode and it'll decrease xband sensitivity.

and people please stay on topic. i've seen too many of these threads get into a huge V1 versus 8500 war and get locked.

My V1 gives tons of x band false alerts. It gets really annoying in the city but I usually just mute it and visually look for any ka band or strong signals. It's not a big deal since I usually don't speed much during city driving anyway.

Disabling X is a MUST, mine doesn't false much but in parking lots and some stores that are close enough to the street it does. On the open road when it beeps there's a cop somewhere.

yes it did go off almost everytime i passed a motion sensor with X Band on. as viguera said it has the option that it sounds a loud beep then continues at a normal continuous beeping at a lower tone. hell just turn off X-Band, you dont need it. sometimes motion sensors set off my K-Band but i know where all the false alerts are anyways. once you drive around with it for a while and learn where all the false K's are youll be okay. just dont rely on it too much when you speed. use common sense. none of these are fool proof. dont blame the radar if you get a ticket.
