It's right on top of the tranny. I think you should be able to get at it by removing the entire intake and the battery/battery tray.

take off the intake and look strait down next to the TB. no reason to take off battery/tray. there is one nut holding it in, unscrew it and pull it out. i actually took mine out without taking off the intake.

Yeah I wasn't sure about the battery. We were doing the clutch at the time.

thats why you never go to nissan FOR ANYTHING.

i dont know about the speed sensors on the wheels, but the sensor on the tranny costs about between $10-$20, and is very easy to put in...unless you got big arms, its a tight fit down there.

That is the part I purchased it was around $22 bucks and had a red gear on the end of it but I swear I looked all over the trans for atleast 2 hours and could not find it. It may be different for 5th gens?

here ya go dude. sorry but i couldnt get a pic of the whole thing, as you can see there are thoes big hoses in the way. its on the back of the tranny on the very top. it has that one nut holding it down and on the other side (that part thats covered by the hose) there is a long black harness that plugs into it.

edit: oh, and remember that when you take that out you have a pan ready to catch some tranny fluid, because some will spill out.

I'm wondering if the 5th gens use the individual wheel speed sensors rather than the diff speed sensor. Because my AE tranny didn't come with one. It came with a very factory looking plug that was bolt in with that same 10mm. I was suprised and p!ssed until I tried using the auto's sensor. It works fine.

are you saying that your AE tranny only had a plug on the tranny case where you plug in the sensor harness? if thats the case, then the sensor is just built in.

from my understanding, the 2k-2k1 transmissions bolt right up to the 4th gens. if they do not have a transmission mounted speed sensor, then when you bolt on a 5th gen tranny to your 4th gen, you will get a CEL because your speed sensor harness wont be plugged in.

also. you say it just looks like a plug held in by a bolt? look at my picture, does it look anything like that? when the speed sensor is attached to the tranny, all that show is the plug for the harness, everything else sits inside the tranny case.

2000 get the speed from the trans and the 2001 get's it from the ABS speed sensor. That's why when you put a 00 cluster in a 01 the speedo won't work & the ABS & CEL are on. And if you put a 01 cluster in a 00 everything works but you get a ABS light.

I figured it was something like that.

As explained, the AE ECU gets the speedo and odo from the ABS wheel speed sensors. I imagine Nissan decided to do this for cost cutting. Did the 00's have optional ABS? There is no code when the speed sensor is unplugged. I've been riding like this for roughly two tanks of gas because my mom has said I can't drive my car. But her only method to check is the mileage.

Nissan told me that my speedo was controlled by my ABS sensor and I dont see the speed sensor on my tranny like the 4th gens do, now I have to find out which one of my ABS sensors have gone bad and is causing my speedo to be inoperable.

PM "blackbirdvq" aka Mike and let him know of your problem. He might be able to help you out.

2000 MAXIMA'S DID NOT GET THEIR SPEED FROM ABS SPEED SENSORS, THEY GET IT FROM THE TRANS.

I had my front-right abs sensor go out and my speedo still worked.
