Insurance & Vehicle modification

Hi All,

Just out of interest, I wanted to know if your insurance companies give you grief over modifications to your vehicles.

Over here, you are supposed to advise them of all modifications even changing tyre specifications and it varies from insurer to insurer whether they give you a hard time or just list your new modification and increase your excess a bit.

Basically, they are very shy of any modifications that significantly change the output of an engine.

Luckily my insurer has obliged by saying that a 10% rule applies so tyres not over 10% in excess of the original and engine mods not in excess of 10% BHP are considered ok.

But should I prang my car the first thing they will be looking at will be did the modification contribute to the smash and if so I recon there will be bugger all chance of them paying out on a claim.

A pleasant ANZAC day to my fellow Aussies and New Zealanders.

there's really nothing set in stone for most. but they will only cover what originally came on the car. I've known some who reported their mods so they would be covered, then their premiums may go up since more is insured.

I think most have good insurers that will just cover whatever is damaged. others can be more strict. I know some who have gotten aftermarket parts covered underinsurance w/o reporting it. if it's someone else's fault, their insurance can't really deny you anything.

I was denied insurance by one for my stock 04 even w/ a clean record b/c they said it was a "performance vehicle". but Erie sucks anyway, I just wanted a quote. no way they would get my money.

Here's the deal. Insurance companies are in it for the $$. The bottom line is if you kill someone they are gonna look for every excuse to ease their pain. They should, and I do mean should, cover most fender benders. I carry classic insurance for my 69 SS and they know about every mod. Total for the year is 400.00 US $ If you installing NOS or a blower I'd look for supplemental insurance as a "show" or "special intrest car" just to cover your ****.

This is why comprehensive full coverage is total BS on a modded car.
